It is a good thing to ask ourselves if our words and actions are not affecting another. We can't be nonchalant about the effect of what we do and say has on others and muster under our breath "I don't care how others feel". It means we aren't better than our leaders.
I am guilty of being insensitive in the past, especially when I mentioned my personal experience in trying to explain something to a friend that needs help and I end up hurting them more.
I wanted to help but I am hurting them the most. Funny most people don't know how to tell us these things hurt them, they endure it until they can't withstand it anymore and go avoiding you or insulting you.
I had a friend, a very good one that acted strangely suddenly, couldn't tell me what was wrong when I asked until she said something I don't like to me and I had to let her be then. I reconciled with her and asked her what the action was all about and she said she can't really fix what is wrong then. It was after giving it a thorough thought that I discovered that the personal experience I always use to make exemple during our discussions is what she lacks, and it is hurting her. I was so insensitive.
Some of us are insensitive with rendering help, showing compassion, giving, solving problems, explaining issues etc. We can be better. We can be more polite and indirect in our manner of approach, it is very important.
We can advise people on relationships without mentioning your beautiful one. We can advise people on their marriage without mentioning yours. We can advise people about their children without mentioning ours. This goes on and on. Or else people ask us about it specifically. You can kindly list and explain what works for you till people are comfortable to ask you about your personal experience.
