Whenever I visit my family I usually go with my cousins to help them with their daily tasks, and this time I decided to portray the whole process very well. In the camps, access to gas is almost impossible, so they use dry wood to cook their food. It is simply a tree known in Venezuela as "Cují" which has the scientific name of Prosopis juliflora. The wood is used when the tree is dry and dies, so the environment is not damaged.
Siempre que visito a mi familia suelo ir con mis primos para ayudarlos en sus tareas diarias, y esta vez decidí retratar muy bien todo el proceso, en los campos el acceso al gas es casi imposible, por eso ellos utilizan madera seca para cocinar sus alimentos. Simplemente se trata de un árbol conocido en Venezuela como "Cují"que lleva de nombre científico Prosopis juliflora, se utiliza la madera cuando el árbol esta seco y muere, por lo cual no se daña el medio ambiente.
Wood abounds in this area, since the rainy season has not been constant these last years, and as the land is very arid, the older trees begin to dry out, however the new generations prosper as can be seen in the background of the first photo, a little green in the mountain.
En esta zona abunda la madera, ya que el periodo de lluvias no ha sido constante estos últimos años, y como el terrero es muy árido, los arboles mas viejos comienzan a secarse, sin embargo las nuevas generación prosperan como se puede observar en el fondo de la primera foto, un poco de verde en la montaña.
Equipped with an axe and a machete, they begin to observe the terrain, in search of the lifeless trees, they are forbidden to touch the trees that are green and with some flowers. All of them are very well covered because the sun is extremely strong here, and it takes about 4h to cut and carry all the firewood.
Equipados con un hacha y un machete, comienzan a observar el terreno, en busca de los arboles sin vida, tienen prohibido tocar los arboles que están verdes y con algunas flores. Todos van muy bien cubiertos por que el sol, es extremadamente fuerte aquí, y tardamos aproximadamente 4h es cortar y cargar toda la leña.
The firewood is cut and stacked in one place, mostly in the "quebradas" and from there it is transported little by little to the edge of the road, it is a very long process that requires great effort by all, while some cut the wood the others move it.
La leña se corta y se apila en un sitio, mayormente en las "quebradas" y de allí se va transportando poco a poco hasta la orilla de la carretera, es un proceso muy largo que requiere de gran esfuerzo por todos, mientras algunos cortan la madera los otros la trasladan.
When the wood is removed from this site, it is again transported to the road and stacked there.
Al sacar la madera de este sitio, nuevamente se transporta a la carretera y allí se apila.
The transfer process is extremely exhausting, but also the person who cuts the wood must feel a physical exhaustion, to be cutting a long time, likewise work in an orderly manner and with breaks.
El proceso de traslado es sumamente agotador, pero también la persona que corta la madera debe sentir un agotamiento físico, por estar talando mucho tiempo, de igual manera se trabaja de forma ordenada y con descansos.
Everything is ready, finally we start loading everything into the truck for transport to the house.
Todo preparado, por fin se comienza a cargar todo al camión para transportar a la casa.
And this is something that people in many fields in Venezuela experience day by day, their cooking method using firewood, however in the city this method has also been adopted a lot due to the lack of domestic gas.
Y esto es algo de lo que viven día a día las personas de muchos campos en Venezuela, su método de cocina utilizar la leña, sin embargo en la ciudad también se ha adoptado mucho este método por la falta de gas domestico.
Finally, with all the wood in the house, you can make use of the so called "bonfire" to be able to cook your dinner.
Finalmente con toda la madera en casa, se puede hacer uso del llamado "fogón" para poder cocinar la cena.

Cooking your food by making a fire is actually much healthier and I think you feel different knowing you collected it yourself. A sort of satisfaction that people in highly urbanised cities don't have.
I like your point of view, you're quite right, it's something rare that you don't see in cities.

La verdad es que es cierto, el sabor es distinto.
Sin duda el esfuerzo es grande pero la comida queda con un sabor inigualable :)
si, eso es cierto, una sopa hecha con leña tiene un sabor incomparable.
Good to know about the same process used for cooking there . Here we do it the same way but only difference is that we transport woods through a boat. I know that burning of firewood can cause many disease but as the supply for gas is impossible so that leaves with only the option. Good to know.
