Designing mobile app - Trends, features, catches, advices... no.1

in GEMS4 years ago (edited)

Good day to you my creative sun rays!

Today I wanted to talk about mobile apps since I've been working on one. If you read my last post you know what I'm talking about :)) For you who are first time with me, I've been working with my three colleagues on a mobile app that helps sick people to choose the right product for them.

So for today, I've been planing to explain some of the latest features and trends regarding the design of mobile apps. I am not much of a programmer but I can share some secrets from the design world. So buckle up and prepare yourself for this journey of my blabberings and shenanigans.

The first thing I want to advise you is to make yourself approximately 17 L of coffee. Hehehe just kidding guys! Don't drink too much coffee, you know it's not good for your heart and you need to take care of that precious muscle of yours. Hey! I've been getting off-topic again! Let me try this again without making some jokes.

The first thing you have to know when designing a mobile app is, in my opinion, how your customers function, what are their needs and wishes. You might get surprised when I tell you that most customers don't know what they want or need if you don't ask them the right questions. So try to be in their position, try to think like them and understand their problems just as it was yours. You got to solve that same problem together. I truly believe that the secret of almost everything in this world lies beneath being together, exploring and searching together, loving, and respecting others. This field is not something else, the secret lies in collaboration.

Collaboration is also one of the main reasons your app is going to work. You are going to collaborate with your programmers, customers, sponsors, media, press, etc. So be prepared for that and learn about techniques of good and quality collaboration.

The second thing is the customer experience. Whether you are working with a service or product, you always want your customers to have the best experience with it. Since we are in the fields of mobile apps, you must make a room for your customer to feel that experience as much as they can without even realizing it. Also, I think it is crucial for your success to have a separate screen with all of the customer's feedback or you can take very good care from Apple or Google reviews as they tend to keep all the quality content that you might use to improve your app features.

There are so many mobile applications in the world and if you know what you want then you know that you must meet all of the customer's expectations. My team and I are now working on an idea to make our users co-creators of our app and I think it is a brilliant idea. We want our users to be active and to be rewarded for that.

Another thing I wanted to talk about is personalization. I think this is crucial in 2020. Those are the trends and we must follow them and I must tell you that this one did not surprise me. From my experience and from some research results, I can tell you that personalization is very important and if you do not give it a chance, your app will not work. Maybe it would a few years ago but not today. Not for sure.

Almost all of the content in the application should be made to serve the user and it should also be tailored to him of her. Users will surely appreciate your mobile app more if they find that it matches their needs and wishes. And now many of you think that that is impossible but believe me, as we are so different, sometimes we are the same and we want the same stuff.

This is it for today. We drove through the first three things that came to my mind and that I think are most crucial for making your content usable and which will send your mobile application to the top with several things more I'll write in some of my next posts.

Those things are:

  1. 17 L of coffee.... hehehe kidding again. Can't resist it.
    soooo:
  2. Knowing your customer's needs and wishes
  3. Improving customer experience
  4. Personalization

And that's all folks! I want to thank you for reading and of course, have an awesome rest of the day.

gg :))

Sort:

I think those are all important points, I would also add in scaling and what is a minimum viable product, i think too many apps get bogged down by trying to deliver big from the get go and don't try to phase it out in a road map and grow with their audience. A lot of the initial work is based on assumption but once you start to collect data and test things you may want to change direction and this is important to any apps success

Hello again @chekohler :)

You have an awesome point. I will talk about that more probably in my next post. This is very important and I think it is crucial to do that step early and with great quality, because everything goes from there. If you gather the wrong data you will make wrong conclusions, hence you will work on your project with the wrong idea. It is even harder when you have no data at all.

Thank you for reminding me of this topic. I wrote about these steps a few years ago and I might complete it now and make a post out of it. Hope to see your comment there also! Thanks man :))

Oh for sure, i'll be looking out for it, enjoy getting into your thought process and how you see design

I am pretty sure you could help some of the projects here, we have apps like ActiFit and Ecency which you can use on the HIVE blockchain but UX and design has taken a back seat. I am sure your experience could help improve these apps greatly

Well, how can I help and where? :)) I am going to be so glad if I can contribute.

I used ActiFit before (when we were on Steemit) but then I started to train jiu-jitsu and I didn't know how to combine those two. Maybe I didn't search enough, maybe those options didn't exist... I didn't know how many calories I lost during my training because you cannot have your mobile phone during jiu-jitsu. There were several other problems and I will help if I can at least to point them out.

You can get involved in their discord chats and provide feedback or suggestions for the app maybe some mock up designs all of them are pretty responsive to suggestions.

You can find the discords here

I tried using it with my phone but it sucked so I went out and bought a cheap fitbit and promised myself id earn the money back in HIVE/STEEM lol

I'm all down for 17L of coffee! It's a precious, precious liquid, coffee is. 😂

You might get surprised when I tell you that most customers don't know what they want or need if you don't ask them the right questions.

There is a whole lot of truth to that. I do not design apps, but I do design solutions for my client's, and I can say with a certainty that, for the most part, they have no idea what they really want. They know what they think they need, but that's about it. One of the biggest tricks is telling them without "telling them" what they need, and having them then want it.

Then we are on the same page! Coffee, can't live without it... I mean you can but it's no good and life is sleepy :D

I'm glad that you understand. I had some trouble at the very start of my career. I could not ask the right questions and after the wrong questions and also answers, I would always get the wrong results. It drove me crazy but now I handle it nicely.
Also, your last sentence is so true. It sounds weird but you just have to do it. Without that technique, we might run in circles for months.
