Organic fertilizers and the importance of nitrogen

In organic fertilizers, nitrogen is of vital importance because its biomolecular structure is present in the organic substances of plant tissues. Therefore, in the production of organic fertilizers it is essential to add organic materials rich in organic nitrogen.

▶ Since ancient times, different cultures have used different organic substances from different origins to compensate for the losses that occur as a result of tillage and harvesting.

However, with the advent of synthetic fertilizers and the exaggerated production levels, there was a marked decrease in the use of organic fertilizers.

Over the years, it was discovered that productivity depends closely on soil quality and that the excess supply of synthetic nutrients contaminates not only soil resources, but also water, flora, fauna and human health.

The effect of organic fertilizers is progressive, gradually improving soil fertility and soil life. In particular, a quality organic fertilizer is able to nourish the soil and plants due to its varied content of important elements such as nitrogen.

This is the most widely used criterion due to the impact of this element on water and air and its importance as a macronutrient for plants, seeking to adjust its availability both in time and space, taking into account that between 10 and 20% of the total N is mineralized after 60 days of application to the soil, depending on the type of fertilizer, soil and climate.
