Balcony Gardening #1 ... How it all started

2020 will be a year we will never forget. The whole world is turned upside down. In February I arrived in my second home in the Philippines. The original plan was to stay here for 3 months and then quickly go back for a month to Belgium. After one month here, the lockdown started. I live in a small place on the island of Cebu. Since the lockdown it's really a struggle to find food here. Just before it all started, there was an outbreak of swine flu. So no pork meat available in the supermarket. Meanwhile we're 4 months later, and still no meat in the supermarket. Okay, no problem ... I don't need meat every day. But then let's look for healthy food ... The litle amount of veggies and fruit you see in the supermarkt are already rotten.

Because I have an autoimmune disease, it's not possible for me to go to the local market. Trying to stay positive I decided to start growing a few things by myself. Sadly I don't have a garden, but I have a balcony. This was all new to me, I never had green fingers, never grew anything, ... So this was a complete jump in the dark. The internet was a big help because I had to learn everything. And now I really love it. It's gives you such a good feeling seeing things growing and the moment you prepare the food and you're about to taste it ... Yummie!

I will write several little postings on how you can do the same. I use a lot of kitchen leftovers to start growing new plants. Last week I made my own bread (in the Airfryer), added some cold cuts and a topping of soy sprouts. Healthy and cheap food.
