When someone does something unanticipated it is worth saying something about it.

In this day an age people certainly love to complain. This is especially true if they see what they perceive as injustice. There is the saying "The squeaky wheel get's the grease". A couple of days ago I felt compelled to speak up about activity that I saw which I considered distasteful. This is generally how I will approach things. I will use words rather than the down vote. I reserve downvotes for spam, plagiarism, or something that would need to be blatantly inappropriate. I have rarely had to use it.

In the case the other day I'd already up voted the post, and replied. It was the fact that my replies were hidden from view unless someone expanded them that got under my skin. I didn't attack anyone and was basically responding to the OP as my name was in the list of evidence he presented. I did agree with what he was doing. I mainly wanted to assure him that there was no connection between myself and the person his post was focused on.

I knew @onealfa was larger than I am. I quit steemit years ago when I was at about 25,000 SP. I powered down. I am still a minnow here on hive. @onealfa appears to have discovered steemit about two months before I did and with that platform starting that early was truly an opportunity and a huge case of being in the right place at the right time. Anyone that started that early and stuck with it came out very well. Thus, I was not surprised he was larger.

Then after my post I truly looked at his profile and his posts. I then noticed the many accounts. I quickly realized he was bigger than I thought. I had most definitely POKED a whale.

On steemit this would be a disaster. The odds of you getting hammered suddenly by other accounts and linked accounts and perhaps ran off of the platform was a very real thing.

I realized that on one hand that doing this might be a mistake IF all I cared about was earning rewards on hive. On the other hand it was a good chance to see if this action on hive resulted in the same reaction as steemit. You see I don't need hive. I like hive. In some respects I think it benefits from my activity. I think the way I post, and write is a bit different from the more common fare. This is good for hive as it gives a little sprinkle of variety here and there. I can tell you I am not doing that intentionally. It is just how I write. Pure dumb luck and a voracious need to write.

When I wasn't writing on steemit for years I still wrote. It was just into notepad, google docs, and other places. That would partially appease my need to silence the nagging demons of ideas. It wouldn't give much in the opportunity of feedback, growth, sharing, and exchange. It turns out I missed that.

Is the financial incentive still important? Yes, it eases my guilty conscience when it comes to the amount of time I spend writing or replying. Without the earnings I'd feel guilty about the amount of time I spend here as time is finite and I do spend time here that realistically I should be spending elsewhere. That is a balance I'll need to work out.

It didn't happen...

I wanted to write this post and point out that @onealfa did not smite me. He actually up voted the post in question and some others.

Yes, that is a relief in several ways.

It is not fun to be targeted by anyone (I have a few remoras) it is very not fun if the person targeting you is backed by a heavy voting stake or bot army.

@onealfa proved that when it comes to hive he handles it very differently than things were handled on steemit.

This is a VERY good thing for all of us. It is also a good thing for HIVE. I think the powerful treating steemit like their own personal kingdoms is partially what destroyed the potential of that platform.

This post is not a retraction as I still don't think my reply warranted being hidden. It is however an acknowledgement of respect for @onealfa in terms of how he responded to it.

The only thing better would have been some words... :)

I thought this follow up was necessary. We should not only speak of negatives. We should also shout loudly about positives.

@onealfa if you are reading this. I did not write this for an up vote. I just felt if I called you out for one action I didn't like that you deserved an honest response when you reacted in an unexpected and even positive way. Do not feel obligated in any way to up vote this post. That is not why I wrote it. It would have nagged me that my other post was sitting out there and since you didn't reply with words I could not say thank you for doing the unexpected.

Sort:

check out the d/v on my account for the last mneth ! lol....it's not different than hive or steem - at the moment.

DPoS is a flawed governance structure (without changes).

Vitalik Buterin .... "DPoS creates incentives for witnesses to form cartels and bribe voters ".

Don't fall for bribes! lol

Yeah. I know it is still here. It doesn't seem as pervasive or bad as steemit yet. I have definitely seen signs of it.

I'll call out what I see when I see it. I do know that if my posts reach a certain value it is common for them to get downvoted. I know it is people thinking they are protecting the "voting pool".

As to D/Vs for other things. When they downvote your posts regularly regardless of potential reward amount that is clearly a personal or bias down vote.

I will chime up in those cases and say that I thought these people said communities would solve that. So if they don't like certain communities simply stay out of them.

The word on the street is that you're being over-rewarded @lucylin, and you're receiving downvotes to balance out the rewards for others. Seems legit.

I saw that -100 POB downvote you received yesterday, what a laugh.

(ps. I am not questioning @dwinblood's content, it's generally top class. It's the one rule for some and another for others that I'm getting at.)

..and another 96 today....smh..

I'll keep an eye open. If you need me feel free to reach out to me at my same handle on gmail.com. I may setup a proton mail account here soon but not until after this house move.

Thanks - but I have no need to 'reach out to you'.
All is good in my world (save for the idiots on hive).

Good luck with the move !

I take it back. It does appear you are definitely being targeted.

ya think? lolol

I was not as much viewing it as a bribe and rather not being down voted which is what I expecting. The amount did not matter to me.

Cool! What I love the most about your approach is the idea that we shouldn't only complain but also give praises when due. Nicely done, I love all the positive vibes about this @dwinblood 👍

I just try to treat people the way I would like to be treated. :) At least I try to. I am human. Sometimes I make mistakes.

It's the cross people carry, who work on principle...

I’ve always seen him as fairly positive person, just protective of the platform. Unfortunately not everyone always agrees with each other on how to behave in this evolving environment we’ve created, and that’s just always a bit messy. I almost left Steemit back in the day due to seeing so much of that.

Luckily in my little skate community it wasn’t like that, so now we’re continuing to grow, and plan to launch a tribe soon. But to scale that to the rest of Hive, we need the people who want to best for the platform to set good examples like this, and create a dialogue so that new people understand what is going on rather than being scared away by it.

Too many people come for the money, but fail to ever try to understand the philosophy behind the economics. Which is why a DV often create negative backlash, even when it’s done with good intentions.
One idea I had would be a drop down with the different reasons why you are DVing, and an other option where you have to write a small note explaining why the DV was done. Also since the reason is clear, perhaps the person downvoting remains anonymous, but that itself could still be an issues, so I am still debating that idea with myself.

Oh and for the record. I like skate culture from the little I interacted with it. I do not skateboard or anything but I've had friends that do in my life. This is the only reason I am not really a member of your community. I enjoy talking to the people but I've never really done much in that particular sport. Where I grew up there was a shortage of surfaces that were conducive to truly getting into that.

It's far more chill around here (Hive all around). A few ugly isolated incidents, sure, it happens. Been involved in some myself. I'd say those bringing up old baggage from the past and not letting it die, as they drag people down through the mud with them to the point where they're here every day complaining, cheering for smear campaigns; that sort of thing brings others down. Yet talking about it is taboo. Most won't confront them. You're either on their side or you're labelled something derogatory that lives way far out on the edge of the opposite side of the spectrum. Sometimes it seems the complaining is easier to stumble into than the actual events some complain about, and I've been around since damn near the start here; basically wandering the halls, looking in every room, but never calling any place home.

There is, was, and most likely always will be flaws in the system. I played hockey as a youth though, so I learned at a young age not to blame poor ice conditions for a loss. The winning team was playing on the same rink.

There are plenty of success stories here and a lot of good happenings on a continual basis. Sometimes people forget, and I think that's just because drama sells.

The most blatant abuse I have seen that reminds me of steemit so far is what they are currently doing to @lucylin .

The most blatant abuse I have seen that reminds me of steemit so far is what they are currently doing to @lucylin. It reminds me of how they targeted @krnel

Those two also seem to have issues navigating a world where taking responsibility for one's own actions is crucial. I think your usage of the word 'they' doesn't fit. These are individuals walking their own paths, sharing a dispute with one another. It's not a Hive problem. It's their problem. Sure, it's ugly from all sides. But let's not forget about the thousands upon thousands who choose to not place themselves in those situations, on either side. The glaring majority of success stories should matter as well. If there were a million here roaming about, and they stumbled into an individual claiming their personal problems are world problems, 99.99% are going to keep walking. On a personal, human level, I can feel for them (from a business standpoint, not so much). I've seen several come out of those situations on top though.

This is something I really need to stay away from lol.

For the first time since I started blogging here on hive and proof of brain as a whole have I seen a post that speaks well of @onealfa. All the posts so far really instilled fear in me but from one of his comments I saw on a post where the guy used too many GIFs in his post, he corrected the guy only warning him without downvoting the content I really can't find a link to that post else I would have dropped it here. I felt a bit of relief and knew that he had his preference for things. Maybe some people are not always as bad as some people say they really are.
