I am currently visiting Kos, an island of Greece
It's the first time for me visiting this beautiful country and there are almost endless places to see. Not only has this place a very rich history with many ruins and artifacts from the great Greek Era, but the people are kind and friendly. This is especially so for the place I visited today: the last operational windmill in Greece located in the town of Antimakhia.
I was surprised to learn that it was the last one in whole of Greece, but then again, why would anybody use this antiquated technology today? Well the owner told me that she produced the most delicious cookies in all of Greece! So that's an argument ;)
The technology used in this mill is about 100 years old, although they definitely renovated the outer walls as well as the 12 sails that have this distinctive shape. It was exciting to be able to go inside as well. The stairs were a tight squeeze, but it was worth it.
The friendly host explained the mechanisms involved and even showed us the mill in operation. As soon as the wind blew the wheels started spinning and the grinding stone turned the grains into flour. It was pretty loud and I had respect for all of the turning parts which I tried not to get too close to. One could feel the power of the wind!
I think this last picture really captured the moment well and turned out much better than I thought. I only have my cell phone camera with me and I didn't set it for a longer exposure. But as you can see the wheels turned very fast!
Stay tuned for more impressions of Kos!
