FungiFriday: Strobilomyces strobilaceus

in FungiFriday2 months ago (edited)

Strobilomyces strobilaceus, curiosa boletacea abbastanza rara.

Strobilomyces strobilaceus, a curious and quite rare boletus. Cap and stem are of a blackish-grey colour, and are covered with flaky scales that may resemble pine cones, botanically speaking the Strobili, hence the name Strobilomyces strobilaceus, which resembles a pine cone.

Floccose ring covering the hymenophore which is porous as in Boletaceae. The tubes are quite distinct and large.

Characteristic is the immediate turning of the flesh to red and then fading to blackish over time.
Mushroom growing isolated or in small groups that prefers beech and chestnut woods.

Beautiful this mushroom and interesting information you share. What a good relationship between its scientific name and its appearance that resemble strobili as to remember it.
Greetings @cooltivar

Thank you, I'm glad! Yes, scientific names are important, they often tell us everything about a certain species, whether it is an animal, a plant or a mushroom. Behind the nomenclature there are great studies before attributing it.
