Have a So-What Cup | Kopp Coffee

Well, I'd been in a sort of slump. A disenchantment with the city. It's not uncommon and the city does give you plenty of causes for disenchantment. Still. It's not a very productive way to live. Luckily, I have friends who'll drag me out of it sometimes. When my fellow caffeine-lover friend heard a new coffeehouse was opening in our neighborhood, she invited me to check it out over the weekend and, a tad reluctant (as I was with all things), I agreed.

I believe it was Don Draper who famously said that if you don't like the conversation, you should just change the conversation. Same goes for the one in your own head. After all, there's only so much nit-picking and debating some issues with yourself. It turned out, spending the afternoon catching up with an old friend was precisely what I needed.

Old. When did that get to be. I remember when we were still only spring friends. New in each other's lives. Except it's been years now, and somehow. Despite the odds. Here we are, having coffee. It did me a lot of good. I tend to be my own worst enemy sometimes, but luckily there's people who'll love you anyway.

Besides, there's something about the opening of a new place. You just get caught in the excitement of it all, don't you?

The cafe, called Kopp, is situated inside the semi-basement area of an old Art Deco building, though you wouldn't think it to look at the place. It looks very chic and modern. Hard to imagine dust and cobwebs about the place.

It being perhaps the coldest day of this winter yet, I was relieved to find they have seating inside, as well. It's not always the case with these little neighborhood cafes, as many set up shop inside a tiny room, then leave the outdoor area for seating. Which isn't normally a problem, as the area itself is glorious, especially on a Saturday. But me and cold don't mix.

WhatsApp Image 2025-02-09 at 02.13.10.jpeg

I think I fell in love with it from the door. The little coffee cup tree outside. I wish they hadn't cut down the real tree (branches) right beside the door, though hopefully that will grow and they will let it. It's not in the spirit of the neighborhood to destroy old things. It's one of the parts I love most about it.

The people were lovely, very friendly and excited. You could tell. You can always tell when people are hoping and sort of angling towards the best. It's infectious.

The cafe itself is like a sort of maze, almost, all arches and winding. Little rooms inside little rooms and twists and turns and worlds to get lost in. I admit I kinda liked not quite knowing who I was coming back to, or whether or not I'd end up in the wrong room. In a different conversation. There was a sexiness to it, I suppose.

We were quite lucky. Maybe it's the novelty of the place, but it wasn't exactly packed (a common issue with trendy cafes in the area), which would've made conversation a bit of a nightmare. As it was, we had one of the many little rooms all to ourselves and were able to have a good laugh without feeling loud or worrying about bothering people. I love that. Being able to laugh.

Now what do you think that is? I think it's a very strong, muscly moustache man, myself. My friend guessed an elephant.

Of course, this is all to detract from the main attraction of the afternoon - the sweet treats. Now, I've been a good girl when it comes to my eating (mostly), which is precisely why when I step out, I like to treat myself (and others). Opted for the pistachio croissant and was not disappointed. Mouth waters just remembering it - and how often is that the case?

I don't know quite how it happened, but I walked home with a whole different feeling than I'd set out. I got the chance to say "okay so it's not going as planned, so what?". I never did like Andy Warhol, but I always resonated with that idea of his.

“Sometimes people let the same problem make them miserable for years when they could just say, "So what."
"My mother didn't love me." So what.
"My husband won't ball me. So what.
"I'm a success but I'm still alone." So what.
I don't know how I made it through all the years before I learned how to do that trick. It took a long time for me to learn it, but once you do, you never forget.”

Have a treat. Have a laugh. So what. Thank goodness for friends who remind you of it.

If you're ever in Bucharest, check it out. Or give me a shout and maybe I'll take you there if I'm around.:)

I think it's an angry little ghost in the coffee mug, I like it, I'm bored of the eternal hearts that look like an onion in section. Indeed, the coffee mugs are special and well found, otherwise, I prefer bulky ones.

Hey, @honeydue, I read in another blog of yours that you're passionate about coffee and the sea, just like me, and that's why I decided to write, I think it's the first time. I wanted to several times, but I refrained, we are in different areas, I'm old and I don't really understand the young people's lifestyle. I don't know English well, I haven't read books for decades and I don't understand young people, even though I swore not to do that when I was young. You are just the opposite and you write so well!

However, when I saw these similarities, the coffee, the sea, and the fact that we walk every day in the same city...

I didn't guess the neighborhood where the cafe is, I'll have to look it up. I've been in a few small coffee shops in the basements of some houses, and beyond some interesting arrangements, I haven't found the coffee I dreamed of, the lost coffee of Iasi, which is my lost paradise (coffee shop).

I'm intrigued by the photos on the wall. They're from "Liceenii", or from "Metronom"?

I'm bored of the hearts too! :D I like the angry little ghost idea.

:) Hi! I'm glad you decided to write - don't worry, I'm not sure I understand young people, either. And I think understanding goes on a case-by-case basis.

The cafe is in Cotroceni, one of my favorite areas of the city. I agree - generally, I prefer at-home coffee over cafe concoctions. Somehow, it just never tastes the same, even though the barista went to great lengths to explain the subtle taste of green apple and other things in the blend. Is there a specific coffee shop in Iasi that you miss or coffee type? And if it's still there, what's kept you from going back?

Finally, the pictures are from Liceenii, all of them (I think), as the director of that used to live in the same building the coffee shop is in now. There's a lovely inscription outside, but I forgot to photograph that.

Buna! :)

Buna!

I was reassured to learn that you don't understand the new generation either. You may have noticed that I am a pessimist, at least declaratively, so I can only say that I don't see a good future.

The cafe in Iasi is called Coffee Story and I haven't been there since 2019. They have something in common with Kopp Coffee, see below:

In addition, they also bring water with coffee, as I saw in Greece. I will go to Iasi again. I call coffee what is cappuccino, that's what I like and it sets me apart from the real coffee connoisseurs, those who prefer espresso.

Thank you very much and glad I could talk to you.

I love that. Being able to laugh.

Not one lie was told. It's those laughs with old and good friends that heal our soul and make us forget the hardship of the world for minute. From the pictures and your blog, I can tell your soul was refreshed for the week.

Makes me want to call up my friends and see how they are doing!

right? Thanks, love <3 Give them a call -what's stopping you?

Oh nothing deep, just procrastination
I'll reach out to them

You're welcome🤗

Wow, thats great newly open coffee shop. It's a little bit new because it's situated in a basement but the twist and truns into the little rooms will eventually lead you to a delicious coffee, served in an esthetic ambiance and a cute cup.

Looks cosy and cool. Perfect for warming up in this cold winter weather (yes, its even cold in Tel Aviv).

I really liked it.

Is it? Damn. Where's climate change when you need it? I've been using cups of something - coffee, hot cocoa - as makeshift hand-warmers all winter. Highly recommend.

I particularly like the coffee mugs. They are unique and the coffee looks good too. I love a nice croissant and that one is tempting. I've been trying to stay away from sweets, and I was doing so well until I found myself 'hooked' on wine gums... and I cannot foresee an end to that addiction anytime soon.

so tempting.jpg

are wine gums, as I intuit, wine-flavored jelly gums? I find sometimes trying to stay away from a certain food/category makes you get hooked harder than if you hadn't tried in the first place (I'm also trying to stay away from sweets and carbs in general...but then...croissants) :D

wine-flavored jelly gums?

Ah, they're called wine gums and they have things like port, sherry, cider, and so on written on them, but they're not made of alcohol. I think it was a great marketing strategy and gosh, they are delicious and addictive. I wish I had a photo but I've scoffed them off 😋

Nothing elevates your mood quite like excellence! : ) That place looks amazing.

The deco and art are fantastic, the very grand ambiance with cup of coffee pairing with croissant its perfect moment.

You're so right, I think we often take ourselves too seriously, need to get over ourself, and stop looking for problems and lighten up!
The latte looks like a man with a beard, I can even see the eyes😉 and he's showing off his muscles.
Great that you discovered such a nice coffee shop! It's a beautiful coffee shop @honeydue, I looove that coffee mug!

so nice ambiance the cooffee shop you visited. I loved the surroundings and and so perfect the match of pistachio croissants 🥐 with blend of tastier coffee.

I'm someone who loves photos.
I like the picture here

A very beautiful place, without hesitation I would visit this labyrinth of rooms with the aroma of coffee. I really liked the mug, an irregular but wonderfully elegant design. The coffee and the croissant look very provocative.

To conclude, a phrase that makes you think and reflect, the truth is that we drown in our problems and let them consume us like fire consumes a cigarette. We should all learn to say: "So what." Life is only one and we must enjoy it while we can.

Thanks for sharing your coffee experience with us.☕

Excellent start week.

At first look at the coffee, I thought it was an elephant, too. LOL.😂 But I realized maybe it's a dog?😁 Also, the croissant looks yummy.

wow what a beautiful place you brought us to know
