I know those sound cryptic but let me tell you what those titles mean. WFC means work from Cafe/coffee shop, WFS means work from Starbucks.

Do you also tend to work from cafes or starbucks?

I’ve been recently trying to go back to WFC which is working from a cafe/coffee shop accompanied with coffee. Sometimes I like working from outside instead of my room. Surrounded by people make me 7x times more productive and boosted with coffee, it just makes my productivity through the roof. But what if working from a cafe is actually not boosting my productivity as it should?

There’s one contributor that makes working from a cafe/coffee shop can personally be a disaster for me; It’s the quality of the coffee that they serve. Not all cafes/coffee shops serve high quality beans. Often to cut costs, they pick the cheapest coffee they can find to make profit. Sure, the place could be the winning point despite the low grade coffee but does it outweigh the positive? Sometimes it’s not always the case.

Working from a cafe in Yogyakarta can be a hit or miss. Their coffee is often not up to par and makes me sick instead of productive. That resulted in me getting sick the following day and thus decreasing my productivity. A lot of people I know disagree that the coffee in Yogyakarta isn’t as good as Bali or even Starbucks. Maybe it’s about their taste preference but coffee from cafes in Yogyakarta is often hit or miss. Perhaps again, because many cafes in Yogyakarta use gayo or sometimes java instead of sumatra or colombian coffee. I generally prefer any latin american coffee than Indonesian ones.

Meanwhile, as I'd like to point out over and over again, working from starbucks is a consistent and very conducive working environment. They are well-lit, not too noisy, great chairs, plenty of sockets, the coffee is okay depending on the beans. I usually also order specialty coffee which they can range from Colombia to Sumatra. When you go to Starbucks, you’re essentially paying for the place instead of the coffee. Is it worth it for my productivity? It kinda does. Usually not only am I more productive, I often have sparkles of ideas and just become more productive the following day instead of getting sick.

For many non-coffee lovers, Starbucks or cafes can be seen as an expensive lifestyle/habit. “ Why not just work from your room?”etc. But for some people working from their tiny apartment room isn’t adding productivity and instead just makes them less productive. I am one of them. If I have too much work to do, I would go outside and get things done. But if I just have lesser things to do, home is where I’ll be. Not to mention, for some people who work remotely, if they don’t have a dedicated office, Starbucks, co-working places and cafes are an option. Being a nomad is a factor as well and the idea of not wanting to settle down in one place is a factor too.

This year, I am trying to make a plan to visit cafes in other countries to see if I actually have a Starbucks addiction or not. My current hypothesis is that I’ve become too dependent on Starbucks and their beans that I almost dislike any other coffee from just regular cafes. I know this exception was made when I was in Bali but what about other countries?. I also wonder what kind of coffee they serve in other countries since in my past experience, I also relied on Starbucks more than I did with the locals. I definitely don’t want to get sick in a foreign place, that's why I rely on them. But this year, I will try to be more experimental and will go to more small local cafes instead of bigger chains. But I also want to try costa coffee since there’s only one and that too at the airport of the capital.

We’ll see where the road will take me this time. I hope it’s going to be a fun adventure and maybe I can find out different coffee cultures from different parts of Southeast Asia.

Hey Mac!
WFC is not my thing! I need to WFQR or WFPR (work from quiet room or work from private room) 🤣... With a GOOD coffee!

@millycf1976 Good coffee is actually all we need. It's strange isn't it? that I come from one of the land of coffee but I didn't quite like the coffee or cafe from here. I still don't know what really caused this tbh.

Isn't "good coffee" subjective? Like a nice coffee to me might be average for Miss Mac :)

Anyway, I wish you have a fun adventure!

you’re essentially paying for the place instead of the coffee

This is a very cool idea and I wonder if people have studied it a bit. I know a friend of mine who owned a coffee shop in a very busy mall had a kind of "timer" running on customers, so the waiters were instructed to either take the menu back to them or their slip to encourage them to pay and leave so that new customers can sit down. When I work in a cafe, I subconsciously do this: I see how many customers there are and work out beforehand how many coffees I should buy to "justify" my stay. Funny my mind sometimes.

Being a nomad is a factor

This is also such a cool idea. Never working from the same place, but always adapting to new coffee shops and cafes. You can find such cool places when you scout.

An extra lure is good study/work snacks! I recently found a Greek coffee shop that sold phyllo and tahini pastries. My productivity skyrocketed as I set myself goals: finish this chapter and you can buy one of those pastries.

Awesome read, thank you for sharing!

@fermentedphil In some places I have been, there are cafe with rules that you can never take out/sit in with laptop. I am mostly self-conscious about the amount of things I buy. I can say if I am going to spend a whole day in a cafe, it's definitely going to be breakfast, lunch, dinner for me. Often times, I find myself to be the only customer and it's pretty sad.

Also, OMG! you just teach me how to be more productive when in coffee shop. If I finish X, I can get that Y(). I do this weekly but now I am seeing it in a different way which is far more feasible than what I do in my life.

Often times, I find myself to be the only customer and it's pretty sad.

Same here. If I have some extra cash, I order more things just to make my visit worthwhile. And if it is local all the better, you know your money will be given to those that also need money to survive.

you just teach me how to be more productive when in coffee shop

I am so glad that I could help a bit with my musings! What a wonderful thought. I need to up my productivity levels, so I should just follow my own advice.

I'm a member of the WFS. I don't always go and work at Starbuck's, but I feel more productive when I work there. Especially if there are people working around me and they are not doing something loud, everything is perfect.

Right? it's why when I have many things to do, I would rather go to starbucks and find people who are also working. It just helps me get things done faster than when I am at home.

From surveys that have occurred so far, people prefer working from a cafe compared to working from Starbucks. Because in a cafe or coffee shop, the price is still very affordable, so for people with middle to lower economics, it is very affordable if they choose to work from a cafe. and myself also almost every day working from the cafe, because I am a freelancer. 😁

Yeah, cafe is cheaper than Starbucks. Besides, not every place has Starbucks outlets too.

I have never tried it, I hope I can do it soon, I love how the place looks and the ambiance as you describe it. Greetings.

I don't do either of those things but I totally understand the appeal based on ambiance and atmosphere

My banner doesn't quite fit for this buts it's the closest thing I got to the topic haha 😆

I’m not a coffee person and where I come from, people think it’s weird to go work outside your room or office. Around here, the office is where to work, the library where to study, the classroom where to study or take class and the restaurant where to eat. If you attach any other business like trying to work from a coffee shop, you’re going to get called weird. I like this though and I think if I were ever in a different environment, I’d try it sometime. I have a feeling it would make me more productive too, just like you:)

Hahaha I have never worked in a coffee shop, mostly because of the low pay.

How much do you make there in a month? here it's about $15 a week and about $60 or $70 a month including punctuality bonuses.

But it would be a dream job for me, especially to learn the barista art.

That's about the same pay that they have here. But What I mean working in cafe as a remote worker and not those who work in the cafe. But yeah, the same for me, I would want to work in a cafe and be a barista.
