The photos were taken at the marina in Horta, which is the main city on the island of Faial, Azores. The nine islands that makes up the Azores are located in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Portugal. From the marina here in Horta we can see the island of Pico. These two islands are only half an hour boatride from each other. The island of Pico is also the home of the highest mountain in Portugal - Mt. Pico (2.351 m.). On the photo you can see it over the clouds. The marina in Horta sees a lot of ships. Ever since the 15th century, the harbor has been important for shipping. Horta became the town where many ships made a stop over to stock up with provisions or they are waiting for the right wind conditions before before they set off across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Horta is still important as a stop over. The marina is filled with sailing ships. The marina is famous for it's paintings, done by these sailers. It is an amazing sight. There must be hundreds of paintings here! Some of them are simple, but many are well painted. All these sailors have put their name, destination or travelroute in the painting.
We spent several hour walking along the marina, but we only saw a very small amount of paintings. They cover such a large area that it's impossible to have time enough to look at each of them. Very impressive. A walk along the marina at sunset to look over on Pico is a wonderful thing to do too.
