PhotoFeed Contest - Landscape Photography #29 : Memorials in the Himalayas

It allready feels as if it's a long time since I did the Mt. Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal. This trek took us 12 days up and down from the small place called Lukla. On our way towards the EBC we passed a place called Chupki Lhara located on 4.840 m. We passed this place with stone memorials on day seven. First photo is my entry to @photofeed contest https://ecency.com/hive-153349/@photofeed/photofeed-contest-landscape-photography-round-29

The place has great views of some of the highest mountains in the world. Our short break also included a closer look at the large heaps of stones that are placed on the ridge of the mountain. There are hundreds of these heaps. They all come in different sizes. Each one is built in memory of each person who died in the attempt of reaching the top of Mt.Everest. An American journalist, Jon Krakauer were one of the climbers on an expedition in may 1996. This was one of the most deadliest seasons on Everest ( I don't know if it still is). In his the novel «Into Thin Air» he tells the story about what actually happened that day in May when several people got caught in a storm.

Four different expeditions were on the mountain at the same time. All together 8 people died that day. In his book Krakauer does not blame the disaster on the storm itself. Several insidents, as delays, lack of oxygen, ropes etc, were also part of what caused the death. His book, which I have read, has also become a movie.

Disasters still happen and people still die on the attempt in reaching the top of the worlds highest mountain, Mt. Everest (8.595 m.) So many people have attempted to climb this mountain since it was first conquered in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
