There is a nice factor if you are using film for long time exposures: Reciprocity.

It means that film sensitivity is going down during long exposure. This makes it quite easy to get it right (almost no difference between 20 minutes and 10 hours). And it also reduces contrast, as the reciprocity effect is stronger in the light areas than in the dark ones.
