The Weird World of Carnivorous Plants | Macro Photography

What's good Hive!

Carnivorous Plants are one of the weirdest plants ever in our world. There are approximately 600 different kinds of species of these plants that evolve through time. They naturally grew on highly acidic soil with poor plant nutrients, which is the "natural base diet" of plants: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. As much as Charles Dawrin was interested to these Alien-like creatures, I for one stared caring and collecting them, starting at how they grow and how they feed and it was so amazing!

In this post, I want to share some of the plants that I have had for quite some time. I was very much interested in it. Their species and diet at the same time love their weirdness.

This is my entry for Round 20 of Photo Feed- Macro, I encourage every one to visit the community and join in the Photo contest!

Drosera Species

“I care more about Drosera than the origin of all the species in the world.” — Charles Darwin

Drosera or most commonly known as Sundews there are probably 200 different kinds of sundew all over the world. Unlike its relative the venus fly trap, the leaves of these plants have granular tentacles with a sticky mucilage substance covering their leaves and are used to trap and digest thirsty insects thinking it's just water.

"Bruh! I'm so thirsty bruh!" - Says the housefly..

Drosera Capillaries

Have you read about the Fibbonacci Sequence? or the Mandlebrot Set? if you haven't basically it's all about sequencing numbers that repeat over and over and over creating the fractals or the geometric shapes that are found and see in nature. I saw it from them. From the Photo above the Drosera Capillaris kept creating new leaves from the middle:

If you zoom in on the Photo, you would see how some of the traps are curled in, those are the dead insects that are being digested by the plant. It's truly bizarre and amazing at the same time.

First, it would grow a green 'bulb' in the middle > It would grow long, curling outward > creating new traps while the older traps below die and dry out. > and it goes on and on.

The Resurrection

zoom in to view the dead leaves
It takes time to grow some of them from seeds, with intense light some grows faster than other kinds, and some doesn't have seed, so one way I grew them is by propagating.

It's so weird thinking of it, the D. Capillaries does flower and grow seeds, but the most effective way to cultivate them is by cutting the old trap, and placing them on a wet moss under intense light
(I had my plants indoors, so they under grow light for 15-16 hours a day), after two weeks you can see small babies growing from the dead leaf. I kept thinking if they came from a mother leaf, and new plants grew on it.

Then I created a clone, it is definitely the same kind, but is it the same plant? 🤔 What do you think?

"It's a Trap!" - Says the housefly..

Flowering

Is one of the most amazing things to see. This is where I truly saw the Fibonacci sequence. It starts off with a stem curling from the middle and it would grow so long, longer than the plant itself, some about 2 feet long.

By the way, the photo above is another Droseraceae Species called D. Spatulata, and a week or two a small beautiful flower will blossom from it and close out and dry, creating hundreds of black micro seeds from flower pods.

"I was just thirsty bruh! then I died!" - Says the housefly..

How big are they?

Smaller than you think.
