Learning some Dave Grohl beats for Drumday

I have been a little lax in keeping up these videos on Monday #DrumDay, but I have been playing a bit anyway. This time I am working from a nice lesson from the Drumeo school. It covers various beats Dave Grohl has done in different bands. I have just gone for some of the simpler ones that I am familiar with. Others are too advanced for me right now.

So we have the chorus part of My Hero (Foo Fighers), the verse from In Bloom (Nirvana) and the chorus of Everlong (Foo Fighters). In Bloom is a fairly standard beat, but the others were more challenging. I am not playing them at full speed yet. Everlong is the hardest as it uses fast beats with both hands on the high hat with the bass and snare coming in at different times. I made a few mistakes, but this is my first evening of playing these and I hope to improve. This video will remind me how I started out.

I am playing my Yamaha DD-65 drums on which I have upgraded the foot pedals. You may not see my legs move much as I have been playing the bass drum with my heel down.

This week I actually did some editing of my video! This was mainly so I could take the best performance of each beat, but I have been wanting to do more video work. I was partly inspired by this post by @ds-tech who looks to be very proficient with the kdenlive editor that is freely available on Linux. I am just using some basic features to trim my clips, but I thought I may as well add some captions. I had to tweak the rendering a bit as the first version crash the VLC player (and my whole Linux system!) and 3speak did not like it either.

Rock on!

Seeing this post made my day.
The crashing of VLC AND Linux is kind of puzzling though.

I'm a huge fan of Nirvana and Foo Fighters. Especially Nirvana as my mother played them regularly when I was a young kid. Pearl Jam was her favorite band, but all of the 90's grunge and alternative is the soundtrack to my childhood. Smells Like Teen Spirit is the first music video I can remember as a child.

That drum system is really cool, and sort of ideal because one of the biggest hinderances of drums is how loud they are. I have never been able to play the drums. I understand them, and in my mind it feels like I should be able to play, but I'm terrible at the hand-foot coordination for some reason. I've never thought of myself as an uncoordinated person until I go to play the drums. The audio is crystal clear though.
I'm trying to get back into playing the guitar a lot more myself. In a couple days I can pick up my new Fender Telecaster-Deluxe. I got a good deal on it used, and it looks like it's barely been played. It's a Tele with double humbuckers, selector at the top, and has the Stratocaster head-stock.

Oh and If you ever have any Kdenlive questions let me know I'd be glad to try to help.

It just seems that certain videos crash my system. I've not worked out what the conditions are for that.

I got into drumming about a year ago as it was something I wanted to try. The coordination is just something you have to keep working on. It's a very different skill to guitar, but both are fun. I have the drums plugged into my audio interface to get the best sound. My better half complains she can hear the click of the sticks on the pads, but it's not that loud really.

Have fun with your Tele. I had one made for me a few years ago and it's great. We have a #TeleTuesday theme if you want to do a post.

Kdenlive is pretty powerful and I would like to learn more about it as I think I need to improve my video skills. I have a project to convert some old cine films and I will need to edit those.

Hey @ds-tech, here is a little bit of BEER from @steevc for you. Enjoy it!

Looking good! I think i'm going to start trying to improve my videos, but it's a lot of work.

The editing was not too hard for this even as I was having to learn the app, but getting it rendered so it actually played took a while. I would really rather be playing drums than messing with the video stuff, but I feel I need to make my videos better.

I see your editing!

He is a masterful drummer, good idea to start on the simpler ones. I remember when the drummer in my band tried to teach me a beat similar to In Bloom and although it seemed simple it was nightmare hard. You did well!

Have to bear in mind that he had years of experience before he even joined Nirvana, so I can't expect to get this overnight. With any instrument you have to put the hours in and the coordination needed for drumming does not come easy. I'll keep working on it.

Grohl is pretty amazing. He's written so many cool songs and can play all the instruments if he has to. I've seen Foos live a couple of times and he has so much energy.

He did indeed. The experience and learning takes a heck of a long time and it is easy to forget. I am trying to teach my daughter some basic guitar stuff and its amazing how much you have forgotten you need to be able to do just to play a chord.

I have saw them as well, blooming awesome live

Nice job on the beats! I was at my nephews this past weekend and he has a full drum kit. I was going to mess around with it a bit, but one of the younger kids was making noise on it and I didn't have the heart to kick them off. Maybe next time...

I want to play a proper kit some time. I don't know anyone who has one though. I know it would be a different experience, but I can keep working on my skills.

Maybe when you get more confident you can visit a music store. They often have stuff setup for you to try out. Over here anyway.

There are not many music stores around here these days. I could hire a rehearsal room that has a drum kit, but then they don't always include all the parts as drummers may be expected to bring their own snare and cymbals.

Ah, okay. That is too bad. Sounds like you might need to take a trip over to the states! You know anyone that is tight with their church? A lot of churches have drum sets these days for their praise and worship band. I know ours has one.

I don't think so many churches have bands over here. I think the village one just use their organ.
