Well, again and again I never get tired of wanting to participate in the weekly featured content themed “Traditionl Beliefs” week 02 - edition 03 that has been mutually agreed upon on the discord server.

Talking about traditional beliefs does not escape the taste and form that is not far from religious and religious in nature. This time I will tell you about one form of custom to commemorate religious day in my country, especially the place where I was born, namely Aceh.

Religious day are something that people in our area always look forward to. One of the traditional belief events in our area is "PEUSIJUEK". Peusijuek is taken from the Acehnese language which means to cool something. Peusijuek in a general sense aims to, as a form of gratitude to God. Pesijuek is an ancestral tradition of our society that has existed since ancient times, until now it is still practiced in all circles of Acehnese society.

The procedure for implementing this peusijuek is to prepare certain ingredients, namely:

  • The first ingredient that must be prepared is “Bulukat Tumpoe” which is food that must be present in this procession. “Bulukat Tumpoe” itself is processed using white or black sticky rice cooked with coconut milk, usually glutinous rice is served in 3 types, namely white, yellow and black. while tumpoe is processed glutinous rice flour mixed with bananas, then shaped and fried.

  • The next thing that needs to be prepared is the leaves, including pandan leaves, small areca nut leaves, and weeds, as well as certain flowers that are tied together.

  • Plain water in a bowl.

  • Rice and Paddy.

  • Precious metals that must be present, are put in water, this is entrusted to bring blessings to those who are going to peusijuek.

All my friends, this traditional event is held on big days, to start a big event there will be peusijuek. For example, peusijuek for a new house, peusijuek for the inauguration of regional heads, peusijuek for prospective brides, peusijuek for 7 months pregnant women, peusijuek for new vehicles such as cars and motorcycles, and peusijuek for circumcision.

The procession of the peusijuek event is carried out by certain people who are believed to have a high religious and scientific character, called ustadz-ustadz or ulama. While the marriage contract is usually carried out by the parents of the bride and groom or other people, as I have explained in my previous content about the marriage contract. Now the peusijuek event itself is done by sprinkling water using leaves on the person or object you want to peusijuek and at the same time reading a prayer of thanksgiving to God Almighty, followed by giving or placing sticky rice in a certain part where the dipesijuek will be done. In addition, at this last event, a token of gratitude will usually be given in the form of an envelope containing cash to the person who has blessed the person who will be peusijuek.
