Hello everyone, how are you all doing on this glorious Sunday? Hope you all are getting into the spirit of the weekend and you are taking advantage of it. Because whether we like it or not it is going to come to an end, and we would have to return to work.
But, that is not what I am here to say.
What I am here to pass on is not another holiday, although we do have a number of great events being celebrated all over the world on this day. No, what I am here to talk about is the birthday of a legend that touched the entire world with his art which was music. And this person is none other than Robert Nesta Marley, but many of us know him as Bob Marley.
Born on the 6th of February in the year 1945, Bob Marley was a Jamaican singer, songwriter, and musician. He was known for fusing his music with elements of reggae, ska, and rocksteady. He also had a unique vocal and songwriting style that granted him a global audience.
As his career flourished, he became known as a Rastafari icon. And till today, he is considered to be a global symbol to Jamaican music, culture, and identity.
He was very controversial in his songs, many of his lyrics preached against racism and disunity among people. He was also outspoken in his support for democratic reforms. He was a staunch supporter of the legalization of marijuana and also an advocate for Pan-Africanism.
His songs were a global sensation, breaking massive records during their time of release. And to date, his songs are still being listened to and they still evoke the same feelings they once did. Talk about being immortalized. That was what he was able to achieve in his music.
He died in the year 1981, due to cancer and he received a state funeral in Jamaica.
To his credit, he has the best-selling reggae album of all time; he also ranks as one of the best-selling music artists of all time with an estimated sales of over 75 million records worldwide. He was also given a posthumous honor with a designated Order of Merit by his nation. And he was ranked No. 11 on the list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
So, on this beautiful day as you flex through what is left of the weekend, put some Bob Marley on the stereo and allow yourself to be taken back in time to when soul-touching music was made. You will not regret it.
