So, something crazy happened right here in my place last night. While most of the sane world was trying to get some sleep, or at the very least, getting busy with one or two things they could do. Two brothers who lived in the same lodge with me decided to fight each other. Yeah, sick right?
You see, their dynamic is not the usual, but it’s also not uncommon. The younger brother is the one who pays the rent for the room, he’s also the one who makes enough money to maintain their lifestyle, clear their bills, and provide their food. Both of them are chronic smokers and they do loads of drugs, but these two vices seem to be all that the elder brother seems to do. He spends his day doing nothing but smoke and pop pills, all the while hoping that his ‘client’ will pay him and he will hit it big!
As one can expect from this kind of relationship, the younger brother began to lose respect for his elder brother. And from what I heard, they were always fighting, almost every two days and it’s usually about things that can be avoided. Last night though, things took a turn no one expected and matters escalated so fast that before we knew it, the entire street had found out.
It started when the younger brother brought a girl home at night, this was sometime around 9 PM-ish. His plan was to spend the night with the girl and as a result, he wanted his elder brother to clear the room for him and give him privacy. It was too late and the elder one said he couldn’t go anywhere at the time, after all, if he had been planning such a thing, he should have announced it beforehand so the brother would have made plans.
Well, the younger brother said he could do whatever he wanted. After all, he was the owner of the room and he could do whatever he wanted in it. He wanted his brother out and that was it. The elder brother wasn’t having it and soon, they began a heated exchange that soon led to the girl that came visiting opting to leave entirely. That didn’t make things better, instead, it made the younger brother even more mad. And it turned into a big fight where blows were thrown, phones were smashed and blood was spilled. It all came to a head when the brothers grabbed knives and were about to have a go at each other.
Thankfully, the lodgemates on that floor managed to break through the door (it had been locked) and stop them from killing each other. It was a really bad sight. Normal arguments are allowed, people get angry all the time. When it’s just simple fights, like throwing blows and slapping each other around, the lodge can keep it quiet and settle it among themselves. But once weapons are involved, it becomes too big because it means that they are actively trying to kill each other. And that couldn’t be accepted.
There are strict laws against fighting, and many times people who fight are treated like common criminals, just to deter people. Because fighting can be very volatile, it’s very possible that you could be beaten severely by someone and then the only punch you get to throw can turn out to be the one that takes their lives. Then, you become a murderer and once you get to that stage, no one will care if it was your fault or not.
So, to prevent such things from happening, there are hefty fines for those who fight. Each of the fighters will pay a whooping N10,000 each to the lodge. And then, to the street management, they’ll also pay N20,000 each as well. That’s a N30,000 fine for fighting. When you think about it, it won’t be worth it, so you’ll be more inclined to find a more peaceful approach. And you cannot avoid paying it because they can choose to lock your room or seize your gas or other gadgets, one way or the other, that money is coming out of you.
So, that is the kind of treatment the guys got last night, I’m sure that everything will be settled by now. Although I heard that they were planning to involve the neighborhood vigilante due to how grave the fight had been.
The point of this post was not really the fight that took place, but more of the reason behind it and my thoughts on it. One can argue that “see finish” is what led to that fight. After all, since the younger brother was the one taking care of the elder one, it was kind of expected that he would lose respect for him. But then, there are some things that should never be public knowledge. Helping your family member should never be something that you’ll use as a bragging right, or as a means to lord over your family members.
But then, we all should also learn to respect ourselves. It’s said that if respect isn’t served at the table, then don’t eat there. But what if you cannot afford to eat somewhere else? What if you only stomach the disrespect because you don’t have a choice… I’m not that close to these guys, so I’d never really know what happened behind closed doors. Everything I said here is what I learned from their next-door neighbors last night. There may be more to the story, or the details may have been exaggerated. But the truth remains that everyone in the street and beyond now knows that it’s the younger brother fending for the elder brother. And that has ruined the guy’s image in the area.
I don’t know if he’ll keep staying here, or if he’ll finally move out, that will be up to him and what he’s comfortable with. Either way, we move. People will talk and move on, life goes on all the same. But the lesson I’ve gotten from this story will remain. What lessons have you gotten?

I am shocked by your words. Such incidents are increasing day by day and the behavior of brothers is bad. Getting involved with someone during this period only increase to the problem.

The older brother might not have gotten that level of disrespect if he at least contribute meaningfully to whatever his younger brother provides.
In my opinion, he shouldn't even fight with someone who is helping him that much even though it's his younger brother. I don't think he can still stay there after a hot fight like that.
Yeah... some people are like that. They're perfectly comfortable with having someone else take care of their bills, and they see nothing wrong with it. They won't even want to lift a hand to help. That's why issues like these come up.
The two brothers are actually living a crazy life. Also, I won’t blame the younger one for reacting that way. It means his brother is becoming a burden on him and he had no other choice than to react that way but at the same time, he should not have done that in the presence of the lady

Omo... it's just crazy all round. Things escalated too fast and now there's a rift between them.
I am nobody to judge but I feel both of them has fault. Elder brother should not be dependent on his little brother and again little brother should not order his brother to go outside from room in the night time.
Yeah... no one was paying attention to the needs of the other, hence the cause of the fight!
Just like that money problem is going on in every country at the moment and that's why it's sad to see that these two people were fighting each other and because of money it's best to earn so much money by working hard. Man must earn to live his life well.
Yes ooo... the best bet is to always be your own benefactor. But then, life doesn't always work how we want. And from time to time, we'd have to rely on other people. We just have to act right when we find ourselves in such situations.
