Readers, they say, are leaders. Casting my mind back to those days in school as final-year students, many of the students, because of the school pressure and the stress of the final year, kept saying they won't even read a signboard; immediately they drop their pen. Well, I didn't bother so much with the saying because I already have it in my plan to go for my postgraduate in education and then proceed with my master's and more afterwards. Not that I love reading so much, but growing up I developed this culture of buying books, and I do my best to study them.
I remember those days. When going back to school, I make sure to buy some books at the park. There are some subjects that interest me, so I do my best to get some books in that area. I also have some authors whose books I just enjoy reading, so I do my best to get one or more of their books while on transit.In those days books were somehow cheap, so a budget of two or three thousand naira could afford good books.
Presently, the price of books has gone so high that it takes lots of planning and savings to get them. More to that, there are lots of developments and advancements that have swept across the different areas of our endeavor.Now there are online stores and some WhatsApp platforms that help people with e-books of any author at all. What one just needs to do is to make a request, and it will be sent across. I can't just place my hands on when last I took up a hardcover book to study. What I study mostly is my kids' books so I will be able to put them through their academic work.
Some weeks back my husband travelled and came home with some hardcover books for me. Those books are so nice, and I desire to study them presently, but I don't have the luxury of time to do so. But I just wish to do that very soon. Taking up books to study demands lots of discipline from the reader. Most times when one just picks up that book to read, sleep from nowherewill just appear, and it becomes so difficult to continue. Those days when I devour books, all I do is simply give myself a target. Then I was staying alone, so I could afford to lock myself up for days, and mostly I do that fasting because there is always something I am looking forward to grabbing.
But now, before daybreak, my little angels will wake me up. My sleep is interrupted, and within the day I can't imagine going back to sleep; rather, I just continue till night. Then when they get to bed, I will be tired and just need to catch some rest quickly.This is why I encourage a lot of singles to use their singlehood well because a day will come when they will yearn for that privacy and won't get it.
