Knowing how to swim may seem irrelevant, but it has enormous importance in our lives and, depending on the situation, it can literally save you from death. It’s a kind of knowledge that brings no harm at all: it’s healthy as a sport, it helps the body and the mind, and it will never be useless.
Imagine a scenario: you’re walking near a lake, alone, with no one around. Suddenly, you slip and fall into the water. Two possible outcomes: you know how to swim, you reach the edge and get out alive. Or you don’t, you sink… and die. So yes, knowing how to swim is useful in certain situations, or you’d be condemned to never walk near water alone unless you wear a life jacket all the time, which I believe is not the case.
This should be something everyone is required to learn. A simple comparison: if you fall from an airplane, you’re not going to start flying. But on solid ground, you can run if you need to. In the water, in danger, everything depends solely on whether you’ve learned to swim or not. In other words, it’s a skill that puts your own survival in your hands. And of course, besides this obvious advantage, swimming is also fun and a great sport.
I remember when I learned to swim, and it was in the riskiest way possible. Maybe younger people will never understand what a real childhood is, full of adventures and some huge risks. A childhood friend and I used to go fishing often, it was our favorite pastime. In my town, there are two rivers that meet, and that was our private playground. My friend knew how to swim and I didn’t, and since we were always looking for better spots to fish, crossing the river became a barrier for me in some of those expeditions. So he decided to teach me.
And how did that happen? In the most dangerous way possible. I would climb to a higher point of the river, jump, and try to swim. The current would take me, and there was my friend, further down, waiting to rescue me. Imagine two kids, in the middle of nowhere, doing that. If anything had gone wrong, I would have died on one of those days. And yes, it took a few days until I actually learned. In the worst way possible? Yes. But it worked, and I survived to tell the story. Today I see how risky it was, and when I told this story to my mother, well, she was in shock. It’s part of a child’s life to take some risks… but that one may have crossed the line.
Today it’s rare for me to go out just to swim. To be honest, after smoking for so long, when I try to take a few strokes I already lose my breath quickly. Maybe, if I fall somewhere where swimming is the difference between life and death, I’ll be as useless as someone who doesn’t know how to swim. But at least I can try, whether I’d actually make it is another conversation.
But knowing how to swim was something really cool in my life, and it has an importance almost as great as learning to ride a bike. It’s a fun activity, full of benefits, and those who don’t know how should give it a try. It’s worth it. Just, please, don’t try to learn to swim the way I did, that would be pure stupidity.

Então ele decidiu me ensinar.
A correnteza me levava, e lá estava meu amigo, mais abaixo, me esperando para me resgatar.
Vale a pena.

Swimming is one activity/sport I am yet to master,I am so scared 😨 of water.
But @michupa, here's my question to you,how come there are cases in which the victims are very good swimmers, but still lost their lives through drowning?what could be the cause?
Overconfidence
That means the waves current must studied and respected.Anyway thank you once on the update on the importance of swimming @michupa
Yeah. You actually got me thinking especially about falling from the airplane. Maybe inside the water and I don't know how to swim.
Hmmm! I really need to learn how to swim.
Thanks for sharing
Learn, this is a great sport.
Lol, definitely, learning to swim across a river as a kid was quite a tough challenge, I did visit a beach while younger and dabble with trying to swim in the ocean but never did succeeded the way I wanted to. I've been meaning to take on from were I left on during that time, great skill to learn generally, especially for myself who's interested in sea life.
