Could You Save a Life in an Emergency?

in Hive Learnerslast month

It is not enough to have complete first aid boxes in our different houses but to know how to use them rightly when the need arises.

The knowledge of first aid practices is vital for everyone. This is because an emergency never gives warning before happening; it's usually an unexpected occurrence that can happen at any time and anywhere. It could happen to your loved ones or to a stranger, however implementation of first aid treatment can be all we need to save a life at that point before the arrival of a doctor to properly take care of the victim .

While first aid treatment is not actually the ultimate solution, it can be a lifesaver. As simple as stopping bleeding as soon as possible can save a dying soul, and also the practice of CPR can restore life to an unconscious victim before proper medical attention is given. You see, the knowledge of first aid is for all; as little as the knowledge can be, it is vital, as it can to some extent save a life.

You don't need to be a professional before administering first aid treatment to a patient; everyone is welcome to take action when needed as long as you are equipped with the right knowledge of first aid treatment. You may have heard the story of this Nigerian Nollywood actor, Junior Pope, who died either last year or two years ago in a tragic boat accident. Rumor carried it that he was still alive when he was rescued initially, but imagine being inside water for a long time; maybe if someone around him knew how to carry out CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), his life may have been restored and his family saved from the pain they have been going through—that is, if the rumor was true anyways.

Having said that, the question is, do I really know the basic first aid treatment? If I should be beside someone who needs a medical emergency, would I be able to assist such a person? As for carrying out CPR, I would say I only attended the training once in my church 6 years ago through the Red Cross Society. It was a practical training anyways, but ever since then, I haven't been in a situation to implement it with a real victim. I would say the teachings are being faint in my memory, but I can do better by revisiting my notes so I can be updated in case the need arises someday.

However, I can help manage a bleeding wound to a large extent. This was part of the training I was given 6 years ago during the seminar, and I have practiced it on different occasions. Having children around who don't take precautions of things around them—most times their actions lead to unexpected deep cuts, and bleeding follows. It once happened to my son; the bleeding was terrible, and I immediately implemented what I learned.

I didn't even have a complete first aid box in my home, but I reached out to a small clean towel in my drawer, used it, and pressed on the deep cut, and then held it firmly to stop the bleeding. Since it was his arm, I was able to raise it above his heart, and it did help to control the bleeding further. I held it firmly until I saw that the bleeding stopped and then found a way to wrap the clean towel around the wound, making him lie down and not move around the house until we took him to the hospital for proper medical attention.

In conclusion, the knowledge of first aid treatment is very important for everyone; it's a handy skill capable of being a lifesaver. I think it's must-have knowledge for all, and the right time to learn it is not during an emergency but now!

Having the knowledge of first aid treatment is always at an advantage as it could save lives before taking them to the hospital for proper treatment. I don't have the box at home, but I do the little I can when someone is hurt.

Knowledge is the first step I think even before having a box of first aid...who knows, you could help someone elsewhere where the kit is available for your use

 last month

Let me go and learn now in case of an emergency 🤣

Lolz

You are absolutely right, I feel it should be taught practically in schools

Indeed

Being a mother, these skills come in handy to keep children safe. It's good you got the training once before, you can just sharpen your knowledge from your notes or learn again online. The most important part is to have the strong mind lol.

 last month

Yea..strong mind is very important lol, you can have the experience but no get mind to carry it out😃

The first aid box part got me laughing. We have a full first aid box at one of my work places but no one uses it. I guess we haven’t had use for it yet.

Having the skills to administer first aid treatment is very good, especially as a mother. With kids around the house, these skill do come in very handy.

Lol...u guys just use it decorate house...but it's fine that everyone has been safe and no need for its use

Yea..it's handy for a mom with kids
Uncertainties lol

It is!

Yeah. Children most times get into trouble that we need to attend to immediately before any doctor or nurse attend to them.
I have learnt nursing by force because of motherhood.
All thanks to God for helping me take care of the kids in situations like this.
Thanks for sharing

Hahaha, most mothers are now nurses by force 😃
We keep trying

I agree that when we don't treat the patient's then training fades in our minds but i think you're lucky who gets training and if you'll continue it you can do it

Yes just like practical work is necessary with theory 😀

You're right, first aid is not having the equipments but to know how to use them when the need arises. It is good to have afore knowledge about it in case we are faced with emergency. Emergency our things that happen unexpectedly and if such occurs, we should be able to handle it before the arrival of a medical practitioner.

 last month

That's how it should be ..knowledge is power not having tools without knowing how to use it

 last month

If I were left alone, I would make first aid as a compulsory for all individuals. In fact especially during marital counseling every couple should have basic knowledge of first aid that would help them in case their children fall victim.

 last month

Yea .is as important as that

I especially loved the practical example you shared about handling your son’s bleeding, it shows that first aid isn’t about having fancy tools, but about using what’s available wisely. Your story also proves that courage and presence of mind are as important as the knowledge itself.

Last two months, I took a course on first aid, and CPR, I did this because I know how important to get these courses are not only to health practitioners, but to everyone. You don't know who might need your help and knowledge someday.

Thank you for sharing this ma'am @nkemakonam89

Yea..good that you took the course, it can help anyone which is very nice 🥰

It's true that we have to know how to provide first aid in an accident, the most important thing is to save lives.

 last month

Of course..saving lives is the deal

Like you said, emergencies don't give warning.
Having a first aid and learning to save lives using it , is a very compulsory knowledge for all , not just health care practitioner.

Yea not just health practitioners but all of us
We should go for the knowledge
