The Duality of Technology in Education: Advancements and Distractions

in Hive Learnerslast year (edited)

In recent years, technology has greatly impacted the way we approach education. From online learning and virtual reality to personalized learning and adaptive assessments, technology has made schooling more efficient and accessible. However, with the integration of technology in education comes the question of whether it is a helpful tool or a distraction.

We are in an age where virtually everything is evolving right before our very eyes. And with every passing moment in time, the evolution seeps deeper into our everyday lives. It is fascinatingly interesting to see the way our form of education has taken on a whole different shape from what it had at least a decade ago. I consider myself privileged to be a student in this generation, with all the mind-boggling technologies that are being created every day.

When I entered the university, I was privileged to have a smartphone and, of course, access to the internet. And with these, I have always been able to make learning more efficient over the years. There have been countless times when I would need to learn more about some subjects because either the material or the lecture given for a course (or both) just wouldn't suffice.

An example would be when I was a sophomore. It was our first time learning about actual engineering concepts, particularly in electrical engineering, and many times these lecturers would be too fast or just ineffective with their teaching, making us rely on the provided materials that were equally ineffective and then leaving us deluged in confusion. What we would then do is go on to search for videos that would help us learn the concepts better.

We would have been stranded and at the mercy of the lecturer if it hadn't been for the remote learning capability that technology has provided. And this helped me all through my years at the university. However, learning as we knew it evolved into something else.

It is undeniable how technology came in and saved education in 2022, during the pandemic. When it hit us, we all had our lives completely shifted: students, parents, teachers, and almost everyone was sent home, and a new way had to begin for them. This was when remote schooling, albeit not a new thing, became increasingly popular and the go-to solution.

This transition from physical lectures to online lectures was a little difficult for me because it was a completely different learning environment, and we now had our learning environment in the same space as our social and entertainment environments.

There are certain times when technology just becomes a distraction rather than an aid to learning. For example, social media platforms can be a form of distraction as non-educational activities can get in the way, sometimes causing a lack of focus.

I watch YouTube a lot, and I am subscribed to quite a lot of people that I find interesting. So many times, when I am using YouTube to learn certain concepts, some other interesting videos come into sight, and from there, I wouldn't know how I landed on Lichess.org playing chess. It's not like these things cannot be controlled, but it buttresses the point that having these two environments (school and leisure) is indeed something.

Technology in years to come

Looking to the future, technology will continue to play an important role in education. Online learning will become even more prevalent, therefore providing a more flexible and accessible education for students.

Technologies like virtual and augmented reality will be used to create immersive and interactive learning experiences. An example would be the Metaverse and the VR headset, which hold prospects for advancing education in the future.

Smartphones and other gadgets, as well as the internet, will improve, making education more accessible to people. Smartphones also come with a variety of apps that can help students stay organized, manage their time more effectively, and also do their things "on the go."

There will be bots and automated systems that will make learning, as well as teaching, a more effective process for students and teachers. Furthermore, artificial intelligence will significantly increase student efficiency. Artificial intelligence and machine learning will be increasingly used to personalize learning, provide real-time feedback, and assist teachers with assessment and data analysis.

There will be game-based learning and gamification techniques that will be used to make learning more engaging and interactive for students. Digital assessment will become more prevalent, providing more efficient and accurate ways to measure student learning.

With technology ever-growing, the possibilities are really endless in education. And, although technology cannot replace the human aspect of teaching, it will be used to enhance and supplement education, not replace it. The role of the teacher will remain vital in providing guidance, support, and feedback to students.

In conclusion, technology has greatly impacted education, making it more efficient and accessible. However, it is important to find a balance in its use to prevent distractions. The future of education will continue to be technology-driven, and it is essential for educators and students to adapt to new developments.

Technology is a great tool in education and it has helped a lot of us understand some subjects and concept better. But we won’t deny the fact that it’s also a great distraction.

All my classes have been online and I can say how ineffective that has been for a lot of us. Online class could be going on and we’d be on another app watching videos. But one good thing about technology is it has a counter effect for everything just like the apps you mentioned that helps to manage time, and effectively plan amongst other things.

The sooner we accept the learning environment will always coexist with the social environment the better for us. Discipline is also very important.

Oh, yes. My attention in all the classes I had virtually this semester is close to zero simply because of other things that pop up and make my attention to the lecture inadequate.

You cracked me up with "how we'd practically be on a different app whilst the lecture is ongoing." Nothing truer. 😂

Embracing it, as you have highlighted, is the only way to optimally utilise technology for our betterment.

Technology is not the enemy but just a tool. It's whatever you chose to do with that matters. We just have to have that discipline to stand on what's right and what's not.

Glad you have you around, teminike.

Technology didn't just help only education but it affects so many lives in a different way it depends on how you make use of it

I was watching movie yesterday and the guy was decorating his parlor to propose to his girlfriend when it gets to the part where he will on the candle it was a switch candle

What am saying is that the person that invented such idea must have gotten it somewhere like internet and it helps people a lot because it saves time

I love that analogy you have put out. The more accessible knowledge and information are, the easier it is for us to learn new things quicker and apply them in our daily lives.

May I ask the title of the film?

Dinner at my place is the title

Thanks to technology, we would have been left confused and dejected by these lecturers who wouldn't have full knowledge on a particular topic, thereby giving us less information which wouldn't be enough for us.

There are some instructors who aren't efficient enough and with the help of technology, it has been easier to explore for more information, making us understand a lot from what is being taught in class.

I believe the future will continue to be great for education with the help of technology but it is left for us to regulate both so one wouldn't affect the other.

I am not sure how these lecturers were taught in their days, but I can sure tell that it must have been really difficult for them, especially with the fact that they did not have the internet them. It's probably why they are really terrible teachers now; most of them, though.

I feel privileged to be youth in this time when technology is massively expanding, especially in education. And I know that the generations to come will have it much better than we do. I just hope they find the discipline to strike a balance between entertainment and education.

My apologies for the late reply. Exams have started over here.

Yea, I hope the next generation would inculcate discipline to strike a balance in using these gadgets for their own use.

It's alright, I understand. How is exam going too?
I wish you all the best.

I can't agree less to your points jay. I see education taking a mega shape via technology in the future and it will really be nice only if a standard balance to prevent distractions is adopted.

But in everything, personal discipline can go a long way in helping out.👍

What a brilliant entry ❤️

Technology, like a hammer. is only but a tool and what we do with it depends on us. It's up to us to make the decisions on how it affects us. Discipline matters and does go a long way.

Thank you for your kind words, Nkem.

Great entry form you, indeed technology has really impacted students in their learning positively and not only that but had also made teaching easier for teachers as well.

Education has never been more efficient than it is now, thanks to technology. Things are much easier to do, and learning is more effective now.

Having a smartphone alone is enough to make education go smoother. We all know how valuable we found it to be, both in learning and other aspects of school. There is still a lot to be achieved. We are getting there!

Thank you for sharing this with us.

It's really interesting how a smartphone alone is suffient for almost anything now. Back in the old days, it's either you have a PC or you go to a cafe.

There's still a lot more, but we're somewhere now.

Thanks for reading, man. Looking dope in your dp.

We're somewhere indeed.
Thanks for the compliment.😊

Great write my friend. Technology has came to play it role and it has done perfectly well. I could testify to the aspect of those lecturers. Most times we get assignments and other things done online. Taking tutorials and many more.

Can’t wait to see what technology would keep bringing to the future.

One amazing revolutionary tech I have discovered is AI in education. Have you heard about ChatGPT? It's crazy. It's a tech that makes Googling and getting information way easier. I have used it to do assignments and did them well.

Technology is exapanding by the minute and it's going to change the world.
Thanks for reading, man.

ChatGPT. I never heard of it. I would make sure to read more on it.

Technology is indeed a driving force to a better future.

Technology is sure going to be a huge help to a lot of people, so the ability to have enough self-control, it's just another thing. The cost of data is another one to look out for and so. Maybe a little bit of time table could do to help on concentrate in achieving a certain amount of goal on the internet, well I understand how you feel about leaving your educational site to a completely different side that has nothing to do with teaching you anything but helping you have fun. I think this is why self-control comes in because when you think about the fact that you have something to achieve and that you really really need to understand this course to be able to pass it I think then and there is when you start, having your breakthrough of leaving your required duty for something less meaningful. But all of these still boils down to self-control and a huge amount of self-control at that😊😊😊

Self-control is a big matter of concern when it comes technology in education. I would admit to going off and getting distracted when I should be doing what I was meant to do, but I somehow come around it and do the needful in the end.

I wonder, though, are you a student, married...? If I may ask, though.
