Jelly Bean Day + Día del Jelly Bean [Eng+Spa]

We are on Monday, April 22. Time seems to have passed very quickly, and I lead a calm #life without major recent shocks. I don't know why I have this perception, you would think that if you live a calm lifetime should seem like it drags on, instead of running so fast.

Well, apart from these ramblings of my perception of time, nothing interesting has happened today. So, as I usually do, I will focus most of this day's record on an #Ephemerides of #History that attracted me. Today I once again celebrate #food, specifically some #sweets that have a colorful presence. It's 'Jelly Bean Day'.

On this side of the world, #JellyBeans can also be found under the name Gummies or Gominolas. But it seems that each of these sweets has some distinctive feature, and it is a mistake to put them all under the same label. Anyway, to me there doesn't seem to be much difference, so I was surprised by the idea that they were different things.

JellyBean are a candy of North American origin, as I read, but it seems that it was inspired by a certain type of Turkish candy, which has a gummy texture and liquid jelly inside, that candy is the Lokum, too called: Turkish delight.

The origin of this #candy is a bit unclear, but it seems to be related to the Civil War. There are references that, in 1861, William Schrafft (a Boston pastry chef) urged people to buy them as gifts for Civil War soldiers. This is not surprising, because this city, capital of Massachusetts, had from the beginning been one of the main focuses of tensions between north and south, or between the Union and the Confederates.

Despite this date, which I point out in the previous paragraph, I am not completely sure when these small sweets began to be produced. I will have to settle for the fact that they are from the early 1820s, and that after the war they were somewhat related to the celebration of Easter. As a curiosity, the word that gives it its name was used, in the 1910s, as a slang that was synonymous with Dandy. A curious detail, but somewhat derogatory.

One way or the other. On the other hand, if I try to find out who proposed the celebration, I find that there is no clear reference either, although some point out that it was during a government of President Ronald Reagan, in the 1980s. But others say that, although that president was passionate about consuming these sweets, he did not establish the celebration.

Others say that it was an initiative of Beatles fans who, during their visit to the United States, imitated British fans and threw Jelly-Beans on the group. Well, the British had done it with Jelly-Baby, but I guess the Americans resorted to the closest thing they had on hand. At least it seems that everything turned out well and that George Harrison loved eating them.

I guess I won't know for sure today. Well, it's time for me to say goodbye, wishing you that you are well and that we read again another time.
