Architectural Wednesday Walk - Around the Contemporary Building of the Philharmonie of Paris

in Wednesday Walk2 years ago

Hello dear Hivers ! Today, as I am currently working there, I decided to share with you my discovery of this place that I didn't know well until now... I'm not necessarily a fan of modern architecture just because the buildings have futuristic lines, innovative materials with laser-cut openings... I need more than that for me to appreciate this type of architecture, even if I doubt that we can match some of the marvels of stone and wood that come to us from the depths of the ages and are the testimony of hundreds, thousands of hours of work without cranes, screwdrivers and modern tools...

But whether it is the early morning light, the empty alleys and the calm of this time of the day, I was seized by a poetic aspect of this aluminium building, matte or shiny depending on the place.

IMG_0931.JPG

Almost the entire surface is covered with more than 340,000 aluminium birds in different shades of grey. Just that and I'm already listening a little more ^^

IMG_0934.JPG

I also liked the sort of shiny clump that balances the edges as if cut with a cutter and a reglet... Did you spot the (living) birds on the picture below ? A little further on, you will find a plan and some models but I prefer not to give you mine... It's really a building that can be discovered as you wish, from top to bottom and from side to side !

IMG_0816.JPG

Here are some technical details...

The Philharmonie de Paris was designed by the architect Jean Nouvel as a hill overlooking the Parc de La Villette. With its grey shell covered with hundreds of thousands of aluminium sheet "birds", the spectacular mass of the building lends itself to all sorts of descriptions : UFO, spaceship, temple ...

But let's continue our wandering... I start work at 9:00 am and I am always half an hour ahead of time, a principle that allows me to never rush and to face the unexpected in a quiet and efficient way... So I had time to walk around a bit, especially as the weather was quite nice :)

Arrival on the lower floors on the pictures below :

IMG_0834.JPG

Here are the models I was talking about before. They are quite well done, simple, clear, efficient and quite beautiful in their two-tone aspect... The third picture shows a cross-section of "La Grande salle Pierre Boulez" which is famous for its acoustics and interior architecture.

I couldn't get there, but nothing is lost as I'm still working there for a few days...

But it is already time to go to work and our walk is interrupted for the first time.

IMG_0841.jpg

IMG_0943.JPG

I take advantage of the lunch break to take a look around the area, in this new and recently renovated district where the old and the new have been successfully combined.

I also like the fact that nature comes to the doors of the ship, or rather that it is well integrated.

IMG_0946.JPG

IMG_0871.JPG

It is a district where one finds the Conservatoire de la Danse, the Cité de la Musique, several theatres and concert halls. You can just as easily stroll along the meadows to the nearby Canal St Denis and up to the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie.

In short, it's a good place to go to maximise points of interest and minimise transport journeys !

IMG_0868.jpg

Just before I go back to work for the afternoon, I see these two sheep grazing and weeding a marked out plot of land... Although I am sure there could be many more of these animals and others, it is a good start. And the sheep are bleating as I walk back to the aluminium building...

IMG_1034.JPG

On my way out for good at the end of the day, on the advice of a security guard, I decide to take a look at the gazebo on the ninth floor. This is accessible by lift from April to October. So it was time to take advantage of it :)

IMG_1195.JPG

The view is quite nice, although the sky has become overcast, you can see the suburbs merging into the city and in the foreground the relative abundance of trees and greenery. Paris is not Berlin or some other cities so full of parks...

IMG_1198.JPG

IMG_1203.JPG

To get back down, I take a long, gently sloping ramp that winds up the side of the metal-skinned beast... All the way up, I think of a kind of procession down the side of a South American steps pyramid.

IMG_1205.JPG

So much for this little walk around the Philharmonie de Paris building. Don't hesitate to tell me if you have been there, and to go there if you have the opportunity ! There is still a lot to discover !

I hope you enjoyed this article and I thank you for reading it :)

Take care of you and your loved ones <3

Bonjour chers Hivers !

I just saved a baby gecko 🦎 it was only about 2 cm big. I put it out in the garden. Inside isn’t good for the little one 🥰😊 happy I could do it safely.

Even though busy, glad you saw some nice artworks 😊 always nice.

I will my friend, I rested a bit more. So getting recharged. Everything else that needs to be done in the house can be done bit by bit, no need to hurry. I will enjoy the new place as long as it may last. 😎

Yes… geckos and chameleons are my favourite… somehow snakes are not.

Exactly it needs to be done bit by bit. All will fall into place eventually. 😉🤓
