An evening walk in Beyoğlu, Istanbul

in Wednesday Walk2 years ago (edited)

Hello, Hivers!

My day has been a bit hectic, but it is still Wednesday on my side of the world. For today, I didn't have any recent walks to post. But for a while now, I've been wanting to complete some blogs to finish documenting my trip to Istanbul in 2019. And I thought of posting one for today, which is appropriate for the #WednesdayWalk.

It's a night walk in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. This area is located on the European side of the city, in the northern part of the Golden Horn, the estuary that comes out of the Bosphorus and divides the European side of the city into old and modern Istanbul. Beyoğlu is in the modern part of the city. Full of bars, restaurants, cafes, shops, and nightlife. In the evenings, during our visit to Istanbul, we invariably ended up in one of the neighborhoods in this area.

For this tour, I will start at the northernmost point of this district, Taksim Square.

TaksimSquare.jpgTaksim Square

In the center of this square is a monument commemorating the formation of the Turkish Republic, named the The Republic Monument.

TaksimSquare2.jpgThe Republic Monument, Taksim Square

This square is the starting point of one of the busiest pedestrian streets in the city, Istiklal Caddesi. The street is full of shops, many of them of the same brands as you find in other European capitals. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, and lots of places to enjoy a chai.

The streets surrounding this street are also very lively at night. One thing that surprised me when walking around here at night was that it was not uncommon to hear Latin rhythms playing in the different nightclubs.

Istiklal Caddesi2.jpgIstiklal Caddesi

This street is crossed by an old-style tramway, which is mainly a tourist attraction. We didn't get on it because it was always full at all hours.

Something I was surprised to find on this street was one of the few catholic churches in the city, and this is the most important one in Istanbul, Sent Antuan Kilisesi (St. Anthony of Padua Church).

We almost overlooked it because the entrance to the courtyard in which it is located does not attract much attention from the street. But we noticed people going in, and we were curious enough to take a look.

This street leads to an area known as Galata, where there are many designer stores, boutique hotels, restaurants, and cafes.

In this area is one of the icons of the city, the Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi).

Galata1.jpgGalata

At the top of the tower, which is one of the oldest towers still standing in the world, there is a viewpoint to observe the city. And during the day usually has many people in line waiting to climb.

Galata2.jpgGalata

In this sector, many small grocery stores stay open past midnight.

Galata3.jpgGalata

Galata is located on a small hill, which when descending leads to a neighborhood known as Karaköy, a port area. On the northern shore of the Golden Horn.

And in this sector ends the Beyoğlu district.

Beyoğlu is the neighbourhood of Istanbul that never sleeps. Day and night, the streets are always alive and lively.

Hi, how are you? Long time no hearing from you, hope all is well. You know I love Istanbul, I think it is a magical city. And every area has its charm, but this one has a lot of life. I was very impressed to walk around at 1 AM and see that there were a lot of people in the streets. Cheers!

Thank you, I'm very well. I couldn't come here for a while due to work and some reasons. I will try to be here from now on. I know you love Istanbul, I have read similar content before. I think you know Istanbul more than me. :)

I'm glad you are well. I got fascinated by Istanbul. And I still have a few places I would like to share in some blogs, hehe. And I hope I can visit it someday again.
I'm glad to know you are planning to be more time around Hive. See you, and have a great Friday 😄

Istanbul is a beautiful city. The first time I came across Istanbul was in a movie acted in Istanbul and it showed the beautiful landscapes there. I know it's a Muslim country perhaps that is why the Catholic church looked like a mosque to me at first sight.

You must have had a lot of fun at Istanbul. How long did you stay

It is a very beautiful city indeed. We stayed there for a week, it was a chance trip. My husband has had his sister living in Spain for 20 years now, and we hadn't seen her for 6 years, so we went to visit her in December, 2019and the cheapest ticket was to go with a stopover in Turkey, so we took the opportunity.

Oh wow! Lucky you and it turned out being so much fun. Spain must be really far from Venezuela right?

Yep, It is far, but Turkey is farther. It was fun. And nice to see the family after such a long time.:)

Awww♥️♥️ I love family reunion

😊🤗♡

Beautiful photos! The time these were taken is I think the best time for the lights add more character to these structures. It would be nice to ride the tram and climb the tower next time and probably attend a mass in one of those churches :)

The photos of the square were taken when it was about to get dark, the last ones were taken at night. Most of them were taken with my phone. But the last one for example was taken with my husband's DSLR. He likes to take videos, but his camera takes amazing pictures. The tower was something we left for next time. As we didn't have so many days we didn't want to waste hours queuing, besides we had already enjoyed the breathtaking views from another viewpoint. It must be interesting to be able to listen to a mass, I agree. Also in the mosques, they don't let tourists in during prayer hours, unless you want to attend the whole service, which is something we didn't do either and will do next time if we have the chance to visit Istanbul again.

That's the best time to take photos really, golden hour is what they call it I think. It's the same in the morning. It is expected to have queues in touristy places like that. I didn't know that you are not allowed in mosques during prayer hours.

I didn't know that you are not allowed in mosques during prayer hours.

At least in the mosques, which are of great tourist interest, they don't let you in unless you are going to attend the prayers but you can't visit just to look around and take pics. Some mosques in Istanbul receive a huge amount of visitors every day.

I don't blame the tourists for visiting. It looks beautiful on the outside that one can't help but check out what is inside :D I haven't been to the two mosques we have here in the city. The more beautiful ones are those in the south where majority of the people practices Islam.

I don't blame them either, since I'm the first one who wants to visit them, hehe. We only have one mosque here but it is very small and I haven't been inside it.

I hope you can visit your mosque there :)

Taksim Square looks so beautiful and I love a busy road too as it makes it more lively even at night just like the Istiklal Caddesi.

How are you enjoying your challenge ma? Keep doing your best.
We, #theroyals (Princessbusayo and Khaleesii) are here to sprinkle some love on your post 😎😎. Love from Dreemport 💓

CURATOR COMMENT:

What a beautiful area. The photography is nothing short of breathtaking! The Tower at Galata was especially transfixing. Thank you for sharing your [Wednesday Day Walk] with all of us. I enjoyed viewing your photographs with the accompanying commentary!

Thank you very much for the support :)

meraba is my lovely town

Meraba :) you live in a so beautiful city. Thank you for stopping by.

😄🤞🤞🤗🤗

what a scenic view! , the city looks so amazing, the surrounding are beautiful and I love the way that the catholic church is built, the front view is fascinating i wonder how the interior view will look like.

I found my way to your article through dreemport and the #iconic team is here to show some love too

20220705_063117_0000.jpg

The lights were off when we visited the church because it was late at night, but we were still able to go inside and get an idea of what the interior looked like.
Thank you very much for stopping by.

A fantastic publication, where each image is concatenated with the description you make. What you share is charming and provokes going out to know all these places. It is a country full of history from so long ago, that I cannot imagine how it must feel to walk through those ancient places. Excellent dreamy post.

Thank you for your kind words and for stopping by :)
