Wednesday Walk challenge : MBAM, Montreal (Québec)

in Wednesday Walk29 days ago

For this Wednesday Walk Challenge hosted by @tattoodjay, I'm taking you to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts aka MBAM. Actually, there's an exhibition on two great artists of modern art, Georgia O'Keeffe and Henry Moore that I didn't want to miss. It closes on June 2 for those interested 😀. Buttoday let me show you to the different buildings that make up this Montreal cultural institution.

The MBAM is located on Sherbrooke Street West, at the corner of Crescent Street, a very lively street in the evening with its restaurants, bars and nightclubs. But during the day, the main attraction remains the museum.

This is the corner of Crescent and Sherbrooke streets. And if you've got a good eye, you'll have noticed in the background a large portrait of Leonard Cohen painted by El Mac and Gene Pendon a few years ago (see StreetArt #170).

This is the main entrance to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1860 and now housing over 47,000 paintings, sculptures and other art objects. It has been located on Sherbrooke Street since 1912, and has been gradually expanding ever since. This pavilion was opened in 1991. It's always worth a visit, especially as there are often interesting exhibitions, such as the current one on the prints of Andō Hiroshige (on MBAM Website).

The first building on Sherbrooke Street is now the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion, donated by generous donors. It usually houses an exhibition on the second floor, with the Decorative Arts and Design section on the first floor.

All around is the *Sculpture Garden, which can be viewed free of charge all year round. But when I visited, most of the sculptures were wrapped up as if for a move.

On the same side of the street, crossing Avenue du Musée, is the Bourgie Concert Hall, with another pavilion for Quebec and Canadian arts. Salle Bourgie is a former church converted into a concert hall with many interesting concerts to attend. They range from classical to jazz... But I never see punk programming in this venue 😀.

Here's the entrance to the room with a magnificent bronze, L'Oeil (The Eye), by David Altmedj, a Montreal-born artist. I'm not sure what it means. I see rather an angel who has suffered a bazooka attack 😀. But everyone can see what they want. What do you think?

A votre avis ?

This church, Saint-André et Saint-Paul, is not part of the Museum but is right next door. I couldn't resist taking a photo of it.

I hope you enjoyed your visit to the outside of MBAM. The interior, with its exhibitions and various rooms, is also well worth a visit. I don't take photos inside because I find that paintings and sculptures don't come out well in photographs. Maybe this will make you want to visit. Have a great Wednesday Walk.

J'y compte bien :)

Looks like a beautiful group of buildings. I'm listening to Leonard Cohn and looking up Henry Moore, Georgia O'keeffe I know somewhat. I'll be interested to see the exhibit. I've been to a few museums recently. Decided I enjoy them so I would add them to our itinerary when possible. I visited Middlebury College, Dartmouth and Utah MFA of the last couple of months. We will probably work our way up to Quebec or down to NYC sometime over the summer.

Always interesting to visit museums... In NY, you're spoilt for choice. In Montreal, there's less to choose from, but it's interesting all the same.
Have a great weekend
