Hi all 👋🏻

With this post I’m joining in at the Wednesday Walk challenge and Make me Smile challenge. That are hosted by @tattoodjay and @elizacheng every week on Wednesday.
‼️Have a look: Here in the Wednesday Walk Community if you want to join in! or at @tattoodjay ’s Post here: Wednesday Walk a Visit to Allens Pond!
It tells you also the rules of joining in, at the end of his post 😁
As some of you know, I have been in Paris, France 🇫🇷 for the last 5 days… so I wasn’t that active and I sure have not looked through my taken photographs yet 😉😎 hehehe 🤭
Our walks were between 14 and 21km everyday 💪🏻 And were fun at every moment, we saw a lot and had plenty of adventures!
During our walk yesterday I came across something pretty cool. When a canal boat ⛴ went through the canal locks…. This was on the Canal Saint-Martin and around the Parc de Valmy and Henri-Christiné.
I wanted to share this experience with you today as I walk around the canal and show the photographs to you, seen through my eyes. Like you are with me along the way. 😊
Photos are all taken with my iPhone on 5 July 2022
The location of the canal Saint-Martin and the Parc on Google maps you find here, see the yellow star ⭐️ :

A little bit more information about canal locks you find In this website!
It states:
”A lock is a device used for raising and lowering boats, ships and other watercraft between stretches of water of different levels on river and canal waterways. The distinguishing feature of a lock is a fixed chamber in which the water level can be varied; whereas in a caisson lock, a boat lift, or on a canal inclined plane, it is the chamber itself (usually then called a caisson) that rises and falls.
Locks are used to make a river more easily navigable, or to allow a canal to cross land that is not level. Later canals used more and larger locks to allow a more direct route to be taken.”
About the Canal Saint-Martin in Paris you find more information In this website!
It states:
”The Canal Saint-Martin is a 4.6 km (2.86 mi) long canal in Paris, connecting the Canal de l'Ourcq to the river Seine. Over nearly half its length, between the Rue du Faubourg du Temple and the Place de la Bastille, it was covered, in the mid-19th century, to create wide boulevards and public spaces on the surface.
The canal is drained and cleaned every 10–15 years, and it is always a source of fascination for Parisians to discover curiosities and even some treasures among the hundreds of tons of discarded objects.”

Source!
”Location of the three Paris canals (zooming on the Saint-Martin and Saint-Denis), from the Inland Waterways of France map by David Edwards-May, publ. Imray, 2012”
Let’s start our walk for today… are you coming with me?
We start walking along the canal one side, going over a few bridges ending up walking along the other side, crossing some more bridges and so on. 😉

Our view…
Next to us we find a dog park and a tent 🏕

A little bit further we decide to start wandering under the trees as they cool us down and bring lots of shade. It’s 26 degrees Celsius at this point. Lovely warm weather! So the cooler and fresher air is welcome 😁 Parc Eugène Varlin.

One of the locks.

Further along we are crossing another bridge. Pont de la rue Louis Blanc.

We find a heart ❤️ on the ground…

As we walk along… let’s decide to go and sit down on a bench… and watch the world go by. Just for a moment. To rest and see what is happening around us.

A little detail of the railing in front of us. 😁

Looking at the lock from the canal.

Looking behind us, we see lots of trees 🌳

BUT… WHAT DO WE HEAR?
Suddenly I hear WATER… sounds more like a waterfall. 😎 We jump up, and hurry a little bit further. And we see, the lock is releasing water into a lower part of the canal 🤓

Look what a force… at this time I didn’t realise why this was happening 😁 but it was pretty cool. Don’t you think 😉

Than more water is being released and it goes over the top of the lock now. Like a waterfall.

Zooming out a bit so you can see more 😎

And it stops again…

Zooming out a little bit more.

Still the bottom part is releasing water.
But look! Look in the distance. We see a canal boat. Do you see it?

It is getting closer. 😁 how cool… we were here in the right time, on a bench relaxing and now a canal boat with tourists are coming by. Let’s watch how it works. 🤓

We see the boat getting closer to the lock.

Bit by bit…

And the lock behind the boat is closing now. DO YOU SEE IT?

Now the lock behind it is closed… this part needs to be lowered.

The the lock in front of us is releasing more water.

And more water… the boat is going down if you look closely.

Looking to the left we see the basin in front of us is filling up.

And the boat is going down lower…

When this basin if full and level with the next part and the boat too… we see 😁

It is filling up well.

Now the lock is slowly opening.

Little by little…

The water stopped rushing… all level now.

Gates opening more.

And the lock is open and the boat is coming through now.

See how low the boat is now in comparison with just before they released the water through the locks.

The name of this canal boat trip…

It passes by…

As it is pretty cool to see the next part, the boat going under the bridge, let’s go and rush to the other side of the bridge.
We are crossing the road… going further and we see we can walk down next to the canal. Let’s do that.
Come hurry up.

We see the water already being released in this part.
As we walked quickly further down and now back again… our views. Well done you! we made it.

We walk a bit further to have a better picture.

This will do. Just in time 🤩😎💃🏻
The lock is opening.

A bit further and we see the boat again.

As the lock is all the way open the boat is going under the bridge and through the lock. 😎

There it is…

(Next comes the first photograph of this post.)
And here we see the boat getting all the way out.

Passing by slowly.

The fisher man is waiting until the boat passes by with throwing in his line again.

A slightly wider shot.

As we walk back up again… I take one last photograph for you.

And that’s all for today! Stay tuned for more Paris related content soon 👋🏻😁😉 I will go through my photographs in the next days 🥰 and tell you also about my experiences and how I thought about Paris.
Until next time 😎
Hope you enjoyed my photos of this walk around the canal of Paris. Thank you for looking and reading 😊 🙏🏻 Really much appreciated!
Here is the first little post of Paris @joetunex, @wrestlingdesires 😊 more will follow…

Good morning!
You are very welcome, Jackie
Have a lovely day 😊
Thanks @coquicoin 👋🏻☀️😊 enjoy yours too!
You are welcome Jackie 😄😊🪴
Thank you kindly 👋🏻☀️💃🏻🪴
I didn't expect to see such a channel in Paris. I know, mostly from movies, the central areas or old neighborhoods and the Seine, obviously.
You have presented in great detail how the boat passes through the different water levels. I think it is nice to travel on that boat.
Thanks for taking me there! I know you'll show much more of this famous city and I look forward to it.
Seems like more people didn’t know about the canal and the locks. It is great to see and was really unexpectedly that the boat came through. Loved seeing it.
I only know it from the Netherlands when I lived there. Now I saw it in Paris.
We were exploring off the beaten paths. Far away from the touristy areas and just came across this.
So beautiful and the shade under the trees was welcome.
I will share much more of this city. It deserves all attention. It is just stunning. Loved our stay a lot. Can’t wait to go back 😁👋🏻
Thank for joining me on this little walk @bluemoon 😊 have a great day further!
With pleasure! I was glad to see you started the Paris series. Means it was a successful vacation if you want to go back. I hope you do so soon!
Thank you kindly @bluemoon 😃
It was a successful vacation. One day… 😎 hope you can go too.
Enjoy your day further 👋🏻☀️
Wow Jackie this is such a beautiful experience that's some real cool tourist attraction through the town. A canal in the middle and boat sailing through.
You are so fit for doing about 14-21km per day but that's a way to actually see Paris a lot better, so I would have been up for it as well.
Thanks so much Joe 😁😎
It sure was beautiful and totally unexpected to see the boat come through. We were lucky to be there in that moment. Very cool to see.
We are getting fitter… lol not back to our level from before the pandemic. We choose mainly to walk everywhere as we wanted to avoid public transport as much as possible and we didn’t have actual goals to go to. Just seeing other neighbourhoods where the locals live and “play”
Only than you get a true feel for the city itself. Don’t follow tourists or do touristy bits. The only touristy bits we did was the Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur and the Champs Elysees. Everything else was off the beaten path 😁 no tourists around really…
So great adventures we had. Even in a capital city like Paris.
That was a good idea I think, walk around like a local exploring the city taking in more experience as much as possible. That's really adventurous!
It sure was… this is what I like. Being adventurous and seeing it like a local 😁
Thanks Joe 😃 enjoy your evening 👋🏻
Have a lovely evening Jackie 🙂
Thanks Joe, I will 😃👋🏻
Hey @littlebee4, this was so awesome!!! Thank you so much for taking me with you on this walk in the beautiful land of Paris.
That lock works like magic, seeing how it operates, especially when it was trying to open for the boat to pass through, it was really fun to see.
And I see Paris has really beautiful bridges and I'm really glad you showed us a few. And that boat is really big, it left me wondering how many passengers it can accommodate 🤔.
This walk was the best for me, I loved every bit of it. Thank you so so much for taking a very clear shot of almost every experience and sharing it with us. I just remember the part where you have to move ahead to take a closer shot of the boat, you did really well.
Thank you so much @hopestylist 👋🏻😁 for taking the time to join me and experience it with me all the way until the end.
It was so fascinating to see and a big surprise when we were sitting there. Couldn’t let this go past without documenting it to show here 😉 I love to see the engineering behind it. It is sooo cool 😎 magical almost.
But we found Paris magical every day. It grew on me being there. Meeting lovely friendly people. Seeing so much. Going far away from the tourists places. It opened a whole other world to us.
There are even more beautiful bridges in Paris. I will show more in other posts to come in the next days and weeks. When caught up here and going through my photographs taken 🤓
The last bit… was a bit of a hurry… hahaha as I needed to go out of the little park cross 3 roads with traffic get way past the bridge to go down again towards the bridge hahaha but I made it just in time lol 😉🤓 I was almost running… hahaha 🤣 but soooo worth it.
Thank you! You are so welcome, happy to share my adventures 👋🏻☀️ Enjoy your day further.
canal locks, deffo one of mankinds greatest engineering feat
Yes… they are @grindle 😁 love watching it… and to imagine they came up with that so long ago.
Great engineering!
spot on!!

and YES that was SO very cool to see it filling!!!!
My husband used to watch youtubers who were traveling in the boats on the locks! hehehehehe so so cool! what a life!!!
and i loved seeing that little heart you found on the ground - that was special! hehehe
Thanks so much @dreemsteem 😁👋🏻 For joining my little adventure in Paris.
I haven’t been around a lot while we were there for 5 days. Trying to catch up again now. Hehehe 🤭
It was such a great trip in every way. We loved every second of it. 🥰
The little heart ❤️ was cool to see. The amount of StreetArt I found… never seen so much in a city.
The locks are pretty cool. Especially seeing it in operation. I knew it from the Netherlands, but seeing it in Paris was special… somehow. Cool he used to watch them on the boats.
It is such a different life. Very cool to be able to go around and stay somewhere for a while and move on again.
Will post more Paris related content in the next days and weeks (of course) as it was such a great trip.
I took many many many photographs as you can imagine hehehe 🤭 just sad I still don’t have a new DSLR. But after our big move… one day 😉

Locks are amazing feats of engineering! Hope you are enjoying Paris!
They so are @riverflows 😁 love the engineering behind it and seeing it operate was truly a nice surprise.

Paris is so magical.
How cool that you captured the moment when one of the locks was in operation.
I look forward to seeing all the great photos you are going to share these days :)
It truly is magical @coquicoin 🥰🤩 the city grew on me over the last days. Will go back for sure!
Yes, lucky us that we wanted to rest for a little while under the trees 🌳 in the shade. And suddenly the boat was coming through the locks. Pretty cool to see… in Paris.
Thank you so much 😊 haven’t had time to go through them yet. But will be posting about it in the next days and weeks.
Today I plan a street art post from Paris 😎
Good morning 👋🏻☀️ Have a wonderful day today 🤩
One can never be tired of Paris and is worth visiting as much as possible. I hope to be able to return one day. I'll keep an eye out for your posts. And the one about street art in Paris sounds interesting.

Exactly… you described it well. Hahaha one can never be tired of Paris! 🥰

Thank you so much, just posted 😎
You too enjoy your day, that it may be lovely 👋🏻☀️
🤞🏻🤞🏻 I hope so!
I'm heading to your street art post in Paris now 🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️ ;)
Happy day!
Cool 😎 thanks a lot @coquicoin 😊
Happy day 👋🏻☀️💃🏻
You are welcome! 😄😎🪴
I didn't know that there was a canal and lock in Paris, good to know. Looks very nice. The photos actually look like they are from the Netherlands to me lol.
There is… @leaky20 we went mostly away from all the touristy sides. So explored back streets and other parts of Paris where we almost saw none tourists. That’s how we got here after a long walk around.
It looks like it a little bit. But still with a French feel. Definitely better climate hehehe 🤭 friendlier people too. We had a blast! It was just stunning. Will post more from other areas the next days / weeks 😁
Have a lovely day further!
It looks so peaceful out there, amiga!!! Lovely place!
It was @bloghound 😊 we went far away from all the busyness/ tourists. So we had sometimes empty streets.
Loved every moment of Paris 🥰💃🏻☀️
Have a wonderful Friday amiga 👋🏻
Amazing, clear river views, beautiful nature, seen some tourist enjoying nature, Thank you, greetings, happy day.
Thank you so much @hsidik 😁 the views there were amazing.
And we loved the tree lined areas as they brought some welcoming shade. Mostly locals were around us.
You are welcome, happy to share! Greeting from Spain 👋🏻😁 have a wonderful day too.
The locks are fascinating ♥️ How long do they take to pass?

They surely are fascinating @wrestlingdesires 😁 beautiful works of engineering. Love seeing this. Especially with my engineering background. (Although it was buildings)
I just checked my time stamps on the photos. When the water started to flow into the basin… meaning the boat was approaching it was 15:06h and when the boat passed me by after going under the bridge it was 15:26h so about 20 minutes for that small section. With one lock to lower the height.
I thought it would have been longer, that is how I experienced it. But now checking it was 20 minutes… funny. But good we can see it in the time stamps. They do come in handy some times.
Thank you so much 😊 have a wonderful day today 👋🏻😁

What a lovely walk post, I do love walks by any form of water, looks like that tent was someone camping by the canal
I do love seeing docks but have never seen a boat going through one,, how cool you got to see that boat go through two of them
Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)
Thank you so much @tattoodjay 😁
Yes me too. We just got there by accident as we were wandering off the beaten path and wanted to rest a little under the trees for the shade.
Suddenly the whole experience unfolded. It was so cool to see. Really enjoyed that. It was truly a surprise.
The tent… yes, we saw them in several places. Mostly homeless people living there. Not sure about the traveling kind of people. They appeared more so in the touristy areas, the central parts. The further away, the less we saw people sleeping on the ground or tents.
Not sure if it is more than normal. But we saw some sad stories. And someone that died right in a corner on the ground. A woman was there that had noticed it and called the police officers. And the ambulance just arrived when we passed. But it didn’t look good.
It also was very hot 🥵 most were heavy drinkers too. Not a good combination.
But were we explored we didn’t see them that much. It is the sad side of a mayor city.
We saw such beautiful areas and StreetArt and architecture. Such friendly people… loved it.
Will share more soon 😉
I look forward to seeing more always sad to see homeless people in big cities, well anywhere for that matter but for me especially in big cities which have so much money
Ohh no for the person dieing something one never wants to see
Thank you so much @tattoodjay
Yes I understand, that makes it worse… as Paris is so big and can help people… it is not a poor city.
But sometimes people choose to live on the streets. Another side of it.
I know, we were shocked, thought first somebody had fallen or was hurt. Luckily people did notice.
It’s good people noticed
In my travels I have seen death more than many nit that I talk about it
But it’s n the streets of a big city it’s not expected if that makes sense
Yes, it was indeed unexpected in bright daylight too. Not morning or evening.
I can imagine… things that stay with you and better not talked about.
Indeed there are things I only talk about with colleagues who worked in similar missions and saw similar
Those that haven’t experienced it would never understand
How Absolutely Awesome!
👋🏼👍🏼🤩👍🏼👋🏼
You showed us the locks in "Action", and shared a part of Your trip!
This part of Paris is beautiful to see with the nature parks, and to get this view otherwise you would have to be in the boat!
Thank You again for Sharing Your Trip!
🙋🏻♀️👋🏼👍🏼🤩👍🏼👋🏼🙋🏻♀️
Thank you so much @lesmann 😁🤩
I did… I had time to go through a few photos of the day before as they nicely followed up on each other. So I could show this experience here.
It was such a surprise to see and when that water started to rush into the next level, than the boat… yep, pretty cool. Love engineering like that.
And these kind of parks were everywhere. Even bigger with grass fields, playgrounds, flowers everywhere. So beautiful. A true beauty to be able to go to and rest in the shade. See the world go by… people watch hahaha in this case it was a canal boat 😎
You are so welcome, happy to share. Glad you saw this one 😊
Have an amazing day today… it’s already Friday 😁😎
Your Always Welcome @littlebee4 !
🙋🏻♀️😁🙋🏻♀️
Funny huh?
You go to these places, and see how they are so beautifully laid out and it hits you!
When you live in these hit places, nobody goes out unless they have to. You don't see these things, basically you stop living on that level...🤔😳😲
Thank You so much for the reminder!
Have a Amazing Saturday, and always Stay Safe!
🙋🏻♀️👍🏼😁🥳🌄🥳😁👍🏼🙋🏻♀️
And have an Awesome Cappuccino!
👍🏼☕😁☕👍🏼
Thanks so much @lesmann 😁👋🏻
It is funny… but I’m not like that. I will always enjoy natures beauty. I see more than others. Like you.
I know most people that live in a place, don’t see the true beauty after a while… or the touristy hot spots or… just amazing things, like the Eiffel Tower, those stop visiting these places. As they see it all the time. And it gets too much. But how can that be.
But luckily some still do 😁😎 and see.
You are welcome, we just need to remember these things. Beauty can be found everywhere. Just look…
Evening now… no cappuccino. We had to go out early today and just returned, so I’m late with Hive today. 😁👋🏻
Thank you so much enjoy your evening! 😎💃🏻🌸🌼🌻
Absolutely! @littlebee4 !
There is beauty everywhere, you only have to look 👁️👁️!
Yes that others don't see it...
He he he! I wonder what that has to do with "time"..😉😎😁
Slow processor... Out dated operating system! 😂🤣😂
Just playing, sort of..🤔😲😄
I gotcha, and hope You had a Amazing Day and Evening!
👍🏼🙋🏻♀️🥳🌌🥳🙋🏻♀️👍🏼
Hhhmmm time is a fleeting thing. We need to treasure it, right? Like all the beautiful things around us, many don’t even see. I’m the one bending down to look closely at the
At little flower in the middle of the shopping street. That made it there against all odds… it is worth it to see. And even say hi to it 🌼
Hahaha could be all of the above to be honest lol 😆
Thanks so much, it was… although the weekend was truly busy. To much things to do. Lol
But the week will be a bit calmer 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻😎😁 we will see.
Have a great evening! Hope your Sunday was nice 😊☀️🌼🌺🌸
Absolutely! 👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
Especially the "Lone Flowers", and greeting you - in time.
All is alive and all deserves respect. Respect that it is in our time, that is special. That the flower struggled with it's life to still be here "now" means much.
And yes, all of the above! 👍🏼😎👋🏼😎👍🏼
I would figure You would have a busy weekend, just getting back!
Here's to a calmer week for You!
Have an Amazing Cappuccino Monday Morning!
👍🏼😎👋🏼☕🌄☕👋🏼😎👍🏼

Paris is a wonderful city, and I love the canals and locks. They are fascinating Jackie:)
It so is… can’t stop thinking about it Ed. We saw so much, met lovely people had some adventures for sure.
The canals are stunning pieces of engineering so great to have seen it operating and the boat coming through.
Will share some more of the city soon. Have to go through the photographs first bit by bit… took a lot hehehe 🤭
Thanks Ed for coming along the canal with us…
Yes they are great people, especially once you speak French they really open up!
Canals are fascinating, the locks and bridges I love.
I bet you took a gazillion hehe!
Have a great Thursday Jackie 😁
Yes, noticed that as well. As soon as you start in French… they open up and are so friendly and helpful. 😉🤓 makes every travel experience much more exciting. If you try to speak the language.
I did hahaha think I took around 300 photos a day, first day 280… I know every day after they were more. Haven’t looked yet how much. Maybe I shouldn’t lol 😂 🤓
Thank you so much Ed 😊 you too have a great Thursday! Enjoy…
Yes they are not fond of the English so much better to speak in French, but it is like any country, make the effort to at least to try and speak the local language and then the people are virtually always friendly!
300 a day jaja I believe it Jackie!
Have a great lunch and afternoon!
Yes. German is even worse… in France.
It is… so much better to just try. It has some great experiences in stock for you when you do.
😁
Thanks, enjoy your afternoon too Ed 👋🏻☀️
jeje yes I can imagine!
Thank you I had a great afternoon offline:)
Enjoy your evening Jackie☕☕😎😎😁😁
