Wednesday Walk And Make Me Smile Challenges - To The Amphibian/Reptile Ponds

Walking To The Ponds....

The residential area where we live in has gotten a new park and a pathway to walk at leading to two ponds. At the end of the row houses is the thick wooded area where kids played hide and seek and it´s where we also walk our dog. Nowadays, more than five hundred houses and apartments were erected near it but they have saved the woods. That is one thing I find so lovely because in Summer when the leaves of the trees are fully grown, it is very cool in the area.

I started my journey here which is the pathway where I walk Lily, our chihuahua. It´s a narrow pathway with grass left and right where its end is leading to the open field and to the new park. It is also fronting the row houses and parallel to our main road.

The Wooded Area Made Me Smile....

Last year in Fall, they started excavating the ponds and set the pebbles and the water. I was not aware if the reptiles were already deployed to live in their new habitat. The pond has been a project of the "Netzwerk Natur" which is sponsored by the City of Vienna to protect these endangered species. And this is where I had the lovely time for a walk.

It made me smile that they have preserved the wooded area. Before it used to be thick forest and somehow it created a mystic feeling that someone maybe watching you when you walk the dog there. Now, that feeling is gone because many people mostly joggers come inside the woods.

It takes about 1.5 kms to the electrical post where the ponds are located or I would say about 10 minutes walk one way.

With the ever changing climate and pollution as well as pesticides there are many problems faced by these species because of habitat loss. The city of Vienna, built ponds where possible and two of them were constructed in the park near us.

The have also placed some rocks and woods piled on site so that the frogs and other reptiles could hide and also to protect them from the bad weather, strong gust winds and rain might come as its location is in an open field.

They might be moving the animals here when the temps start to pick-up a bit as the weather was unstable, too cold in the night and warm during the day.. As of now, I have not seen any of them in the pond. Time will tell, let us see.

This is the pathway leading to where I started my walk and where I have to go back. The city admins are getting ready to plant more trees which they have also done now in the pond and thanks to them that they have also preserved the wooded area.... it is truly a pure nature experience!
