Walking With Ancient Greeks

in Wednesday Walk2 years ago

It's time for the #WednesdayWalk guys! This time, I will take you for a bit different walk as we will go back in history... Yes, I had this walk a couple of weeks ago, but I mean a lot more back in history... We will walk with ancient Greeks learning about their tradition and customs...

Firstly, we will check out the city center of Sagunto, which looks like one of those small Spanish towns, but in reality, it has over 60.000 habitants! In the first photo, you can see the Town Hall, but by the number of people on the streets, you would never tell that it has so many people!

00.jpg

If the city isn't that "ultra-popular", usually, these old town centers don't have many shops and stores, and I suppose that because of that, people aren't "interested" to spend time there... On the other side, walking through these streets takes you back 200-300 years as it's almost the same as it was before! You can imagine people selling stuff on the medieval streets!

01.jpg

02.jpg

The local church is only a couple of meters far away from the town hall... Among other things, the city is popular for Sagunto Castle which dates almost 2000 years ago, but we will leave that for some other post...

03.jpg

I would like to dedicate this post to my visit to a small local house/museum in this city, which isn't the only one in the city... At the moment when I was there, it had an amazing exhibition of Ancient Greek pieces...

04.jpg

As a matter of time, the city is famous for the remains of the Roman city of Saguntum, and seeing this exhibition of Greek traditions was a perfect mix of two very important parts of human history...

05.jpg

In these photos, we can see women's clothes, and of course, men's armors of Greek soldiers... Viewing this, the first image in my head was Russell Crowe yelling THIS IS SPARTAAA 😄

06.jpg

For those who like literature, Greek tragic dramatists had a small part for them in the museum...

07.jpg

Almost every person on the planet knows the story of the Troyan horse, and we can see the small replica of the head in the image below...

08.jpg

If you want to learn more about the influences on Greek theater, you can zoom in on the image below and read more about it...

<-------------------------------->

In the museum, they have created separate rooms for female traditional clothes, and male "characters"... As there are many famous characters from the Greek tragedy...

14.jpg

15.jpg

You can find awesome replicas of arrows...

16.jpg

...and the bow of Philoctetes...

17.jpg

18.jpg

19.jpg

<-------------------------------->

20.jpg

This was probably the most interesting part of the museum as these masks do look creepy without the faces behind them... :) Before this day, I didn't know that masks were a very important part of Greek history... All actors in the Greek drama were wearing masks, including chorus members!

<-------------------------------->

24.jpg

In the photo above we can see Athena with her helmet and spear...

25.jpg

Look at the outside of the museum, which I forgot to mention, was actually the house of one wealthy citizen in the past... It is called Casa de Berenguer... History inside the history... :)

26.jpg

If you were playing Assassin's Creed game or watching the movie, you have probably seen something similar to this Herakles mace...

27.jpg

...or this awesome two-bladed ax!

28.jpg

And in the end, you can see something from the "newer history" of the city... This is a small replica of the High Ovens Monument, which is located in the other part of the city... It can be visited and you can actually walk through these plants that you see in the photo... I didn't find articles in English about it, but if you know Spanish, you can check this link...

Thank you for your valuable time,

~ph~

the cool streets and buildings with the lack of people did take us back in time and then that cool exhibit took us way back so cool

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

Indeed! I like these old town centers, with narrow streets and houses built of stones...

Thank you for giving us a virtual tour of that historic town and museum.

...or this awesome two-bladed ax!

How interesting... To learn about Greek history from Spain. I also like these towns with a medieval look. I assume only part of the city was old, and it also had a modern part.

Yeah, exactly... Only the city center is old, all the rest is like an ordinary place... It was probably a small town a long time ago...
