Uno de mis artistas favoritos es Ilya Kushinov, de seguro ya lo conocen: Ese artista ruso con un estilo tan caraterístico que serías capáz de distinguirlo en cualquier parte. Me gusta pensar que mi estilo (aunque aún soy un principiante) se ha visto bastante influenciado por el suyo.

Sus ilustraciones tienen algo que las hace muy vistozas: Paleta de colores muy saturadas, alto contraste y ese efecto de luz que utiliza en casi todo. Con propósitos de estudio busqué varios tutoriales en YouTube (casualmente había uno suyo) para saber exáctamente qué hace en sus ilustraciones.
His illustrations have something that makes them very cool: A saturated color palette, high contrast and that light effect that he uses in almost everything. For study purposes, I looked up various tutorials on YouTube (there was one made by him, by the way) to find out exactly what he does during his process.
Para practicar, agarré una foto de mi YouTuber favorita: “The Sphere Hunter” (vayan a verla si saben inglés y les gustan los videojuegos) y la dibujé con mi estilo para aplicarle el “proceso Ilya” como pude.
To practice, I used a photo of my favorite YouTuber: "The Sphere Hunter" (go check her out if you know English and like video games) and drew her in my style to apply the "Ilya process” as best I could.
Afortunadamente existe lo digital para arreglar cosas porque el dibujo en papel fue un desastre: Lo hice en diez minutos viendo una referencia en el celular, pero creo que he dibujado a alguien sentado una sola vez en mi vida y habrá sido cuando empecé a estudiar.
Fortunately, there are digital ways to fix things because the drawing on paper was a disaster: I did it in ten minutes watching a reference on my phone, but I think I have drawn someone sitting only once in my life and it may have been when I started studying.
Viendo el dibujo en la pantalla del computador y volteándolo se notaban mejor la cantidad de errores que tenía (así se aprende). Así que lo vetoricé arreglando todo lo que pude y preferí que no se vieran las piernas cruzadas; no estaba cómodo con como quedaron. Mejor practico dibujando más gente sentada.
Seeing the drawing on the computer screen and fliping it I was able to see many of the mistakes I made (this is how you learn). So I fixed everything as best as I could and I preferred not to show the crossed legs; I wasn't comfortable with how they turned out. It’s better if I practice drawing more people sitting down.
El lineart lo dupliqué varias veces y lo teñí de un color diferente en cada capa, luego borré con un pincel suave las partes en las que no me convencía cada color.
I duplicated the lineart several times and colored it differently in each layer, then I erased with a soft brush the parts where the colors didn’t convince me enough.
También le apliqué un “Aclarar” de paso en algunos lugares donde quería que se viera el efecto de resplandor con diferentes colores.
I also applied a “Lighten” in some places where I wanted the glow effect to show with different colors.
Aquí rellené cada parte con su color correspondiente. Como pueden ver, ya se nota más donde está el resplandor azul y amarillo.
Here I filled in each part with its corresponding color. As you can see, it is already more noticeable where the blue and yellow glow is.

I colored the background with pastel colors (you could call them vintage too).
Aquí apliqué la primera capa de sombras. Si se utiliza un color cálido para la luz (un amarillo), lo mejor es usar uno frío para las sombras (en este caso usé un morado, aunque podría haber quedado mejor).
Here I applied the first layer of shadows. If you use a warm color for the light (yellow), it is better to use a cool one for the shadows (in this case I applied purple, although it could have end up better than it did).

Notarán que ya se notan mucho más las zonas donde impacta el resplandor de la luz.
You will notice that the areas where the bloom of light impacts are already much more noticeable.

I applied some more illuminated details here, but nothing to write home about.
Finalmente se seleccionan todas las capas, se copian y se pegan como una sola arriba de todo y se le aplica un blur gaussiano, con la ayuda del mismo pincel suave de antes se borra la capa sólo encima del personaje, pero dejando intactos los bordes; esto completa el efecto de mucha luminosidad.
Finally, we select all the layers and pasted as one on top of everything, and apply a Gaussian blur, with the help of the same soft brush as before, the layer is erased only above the character, but leaving the edges intact; this completes the effect of high luminosity.
Aunque podría dejarse ahí, Ilya de vez en cuando utiliza un efecto de “Aberración cromática”, que según Wikipedia se define como: “Un tipo de distorsión óptica provocada por la imposibilidad de una lente para enfocar todos los colores en un único punto de convergencia”. Es decir: sale cada color por su lado. Por lo tanto, apliqué también ese pequeño efecto y quedó lo que ven ahí.
Although it could be left there, Ilya occasionally uses a “Chromatic Aberration” effect, which according to Wikipedia is defined as: “A type of optical distortion caused by the inability of a lens to focus all colors on a single point of convergence. ”. That is to say: each color goes its separate ways. Therefore, I also applied that small effect and it turned out the way you see it.
