Vulpes vulpes

Amber eyes and black socks. Adaptable shapeshifters and conquerors

Scientifically known as Vulpes vulpes or the fox.

An animal so adaptable and pervasive that it has reached every continent on Earth except for Antarctica.

So many myths and legends surround them. Mystical and almost otherworldly magics are said to swirl around them.

Making them a great source of artistic inspiration.

Outfox the Fox!

Criminally smart, the trickster, be "sly like a fox". Synonymous with the word cunning. Using cleverness to squirm out of troublesome situations. It's interesting when you read stories about foxes in historical cultures. The roles they played in the stories that were shared between people of the past. Oftentimes portrayed as a trouble maker but occasionally helpful to those in need.

One must wonder if these stories are a reflection of ancient peoples' various interactions with the animal. Pest or teacher. Seems to be a dual perspective of them.

Creations and Magics

For this piece in particular I was drawn to the creation legend of the Atsugewi Tribe or the "Pine-tree people" as they refer to themselves in their language. A story that celebrates this beautiful animal and even shows a tiny bit of love to the coyote (another animal commonly recognized as a trickster in peoples of the past).

In this myth, the focus is not the Red Fox. Instead, it is about the very rare Silver Fox. A magnificent melanistic variant that possesses a coat of black and silver fur. Absolutely beautiful, if you've never seen one I do suggest you do a brief little google.

As with many creation stories Fox sculpts together land. Creates a place for all beings to live and thrive. All while never revealing the true conception of how the earth came to be. Expecting nor wanting any credit in return. Using patience and wisdom (and a teeny bit of innocent trickery) to overcome any obstacles in the way.

A lot of these stories were transcribed from oral sources and are not vast and lengthy. The author was an Anthropologist whose focus was on retrieving culturally significant information specifically regarding the Tribes of Northern California during the Huntington Expedition.

If you are curious about some slightly obscure myths and legends, this is a worthwhile read.

Vulpes reminds me of a pokemon before they evolved into nine tails.

Fun fact: I am pretty sure that is intentional! It's a combination of the word Vulpus and the word six (since she has six tail swirls).

Never counted the tails on vulpix before but now I know it's 6 XD
