One thing I read a long time ago about the most famous con artists and cult leaders is these things only work because the scammed are willing participants in the scam.
Just look at the Q cult, it doesn't matter what evidence people provide that they have been conned, they dig in deeper. There is a woman in Canada who has declared herself Queen and her followers are having power cut off in the middle of winter and even losing their homes because they are following her instructions to not pay, and can't understand why their magic words are not making the police back off. Rather than blame her as the criminal she is, they wonder if they somehow did it wrong :(
