Onboarding Chess Players On Hive: Benefits & Downsides

in The Chess Communitylast year

I haven't been able to make videos this season 😐

Hi Chess Lovers,

With this season's Fridays Hivechess event coming to an end, It is worth analyzing and looking for ways to improve the chess community. When we take a look at the prize generated after weeks of play, I can say there is a huge improvement in the rewards thanks to @stayoutoftherz. This season featured a new sponsor in @leogrowth which is a big indicator that Chess can be supported and promoted on Hive. Things are improving, The tournaments are getting tougher, Alot of new players are popping up every week. Some people join, and we don't see them again.

In this post, I want to write some ideas on what I think about Onboarding New Chess players on Hive- Its Pros and Cons. Feel free to tell me what you think in the comment section.

Let's Start With Previously Onboarded Players.

I was technically the only known Nigerian that has been playing Hivechess for a while. However, In over a year, I've been able to onboard 5 Nigerian chess players amongst which 4 have been actively playing Hivechess.

@pamboy27, @kintokris, @iammanythings1, and @wildthougts have been actively playing, while newly onboarded user @ajumaa has played only twice this season.

Now, I'm going to share a statement by @agreste before I share my thoughts.

I think it's great that new players are creating a Hive account because that means that the tournament is bringing new users to the platform. But if a user stays with 0 posts, 0 HP, and no interaction with other users, it doesn't seem to me to add up. Maybe it would be good if the prizes are conditional on a certain level of commitment to the growth of our blockchain.

It's Not So Simple...

Yes, I think it's great that players are coming into Hive through chess However, I think it is the same thing as other games. Chess players are a different kind of breed. It's not so simple convincing them to invest heavily in Hive. They have to figure it out themselves over time.

These things take time. For example, @iammanythings1 is a manager of Danhypro chess academy and is no longer an active chess player so it was a bit easy pitching Hive to him. He enjoys playing chess and writing too. With the help of @ocd, I've been able to support him when I can. Last Hivechess tournament, He was able to get his best finish.

Is he committed to the Blockchain?

I don't think so for now. Unlike the other non-boarded chess players, He has made the least number of comments and posts. I think he always pops up only to play chess or write a post. After a recent conversation, I think all that is about to change as he understands more about Hive now.

I don't think new players should be conditioned to do alot, maybe just an introduction post and joining the community discord server at least will do. These things take time and at the end of the day, people get to discover that Hive is a beautiful and interesting place.

High level of competition

I've always enjoyed a high level of competition. I love hard tournaments. I love to play good and strong players. It gladens my heart to currently be in the third spot in this season's Hivechess. Why? because of how tough this season has been.

Look at the Ratings! You would see how tough it has been. This is what I like to see.

The 4 players I onboarded are in the top 12 and are doing well.

What would happen if I onboard stronger Nigerian players?

It would get tougher! Since I can't handle some players, Maybe I can bring people who can handle them or at least try.

Bringing new chess players to Hivechess comes at a cost as many of them might focus only on chess. Might not explore the blockchain, or might take time before committing to Hive.

In Conclusion...

I think onboarding players to Hive through chess is not a bad idea. I'm always going to do my best to help them go beyond chess alone and explore other areas of Hive. However, Humans are not so easy to handle and it might take some time. The good part is if I succeed, Hivechess might just become very, very tough. Maybe @stayoutoftherz would need to give category prizes Hehehehe.

Hi! First of all, congratulations for the great job bringing Nigerian chess players to Hive. I know it is not easy to onboard new users and it takes time: it is one thing to convince a chess player to play a tournament and another to write, comment, vote. What I was referring to is that there could be cases of chess players who create an account and never interact with the blockchain except to get their prize and sell it on an exchange. I prefer to give my vote to users who bring value to Hive and I think that is also the case for many of those who vote for having a good reward pool, so I would not like that vote to indirectly go to people who do not interact with the blockchain or do power up. I think maybe a solution could be that the rewards would not be in Hive, but in the form of HP delegation (that lasts for a season) and then returns to a pool that would always be growing. It seems to me that a nice delegation would be a good reward both for those who want to start in Hive, as well as for those of us who already have some time here, and would discourage "capital flight". Cheers! !PIZZA !LUV

I understand your point. It's valid. I just felt to look at the benefits and downsides of it.

At the end of the day, people might still not use the delegations and forfeit their price if they don't understand

Indeed, but even more so better a non-active winner gets a delegation vs. Hive, because this would then not be a complete waste of the Hive and that delegation could be of more use next time.

This is actually a great idea! By this the pricepool would not automatically go to 0 but could keep growing!

Thanks for the Hive! Didn't even notice since :)

OBVIOUS DIFFICULTIES
I strongly promoted steem and I think a few family members and friends may have read a few of my posts on steem. I found steem on my own after my granddaughters became interested in chess. I created them a youtube page, website and wrote a chess program for them. They were big fans of (Stem) as they insisted on calling it. Most of my early post were written so they might like them. Many of my steem & Hive post are on their website blog page (www.bbgirlsgames.com). On some occasion the webpage got many views and possibly could have resulted in someone joining Hive or Steem.

Similar to you I have many friends some very strong chess players. I understand most are not interested in social media. It's been a while since I talk to an old chess friend he had stop playing. He gave a lot of understandable reasons but I know the real reason was a 70% decline in playing ability. I tried to convince him that my play had decline too but he insisted that I was still a chess Champ and tournament winner (LOL).

RECENT RECRUITMENT EFFORTS
I have talked to my two son about the Hive 20% apr saving.

Note: Trying to match your speed in our last match I decline to take your rook, I don't think it mattered that much though :).

It´s always difficult convincing people to explore the Hive blockchain itself when all they are after is to play the game and opt out. Only a few will be committed to doing that though but it takes a lot of time and effort to convince them that there are lots of benefits to being so committed to Hive and interacting with the blockchain instead of facing the game alone.

Yes, you're right. Look at it this way they might also one day decide to look around and see what Hive really is.

Yes, you are right.

Well done for onboarding people.
Hive is not foreveryone, and I think chess players will make their own minds up.

Talking of chess, I have not played for years.

Have you seen Immortal (Chess) Game yet??? --> https://r.immortal.game/ff6a1e3e4e

We are all earning ETH ( ~ $5.00 - $10.00 USD personally) for playing. This may be a FOCUS for the Hive Chess team, as they can play Immortal, and convert their Hive -> ETH, and ETH -> Hive.

Check it out.

The Hive chess is super fun and tough too. I'm glad I'm a part.

Your post is inspiring some very good ideas!

Thank you! One quick question, Have u ever brought anyone to Hive?

If No, why? Is it because of the obvious difficulties in succeeding here?

Never knew of this community nor about how many hivers we have that love chess, but it's definitely a lovely and smart activity!

Yes it is, Thanks for stopping by mi amiga @gabrielatravels

Wow, I have hung around a 1300 rating for a few years now.
I need to work on my game.
