Everything has been goong much slowly than planned these past two months. The one thing that’s been truly flourishing is my Japanese study.
Sometimes it’s hard to justify that I still study Japanese. I’ve been conversational since 2010 and I have been studying serious-ishly for almost 10 years.
There was a clear plateau after about 5 years and I took a 6-8 year break after my 6th year, and at the time I wanted to focus on Mandarin ans eventually some European languages.
But things change, I ended up back in Japan when certain life plans fell apart, and in many ways it was the same place but technology had changed how people interact and an aching economy has changed the social landscape.
I wanted to go deeper this time.
Last time I had done my best to think like a Japanese person and had the time and energy to socialize a lot. This time I wanted to go deeper with a better understanding of the language and myself.
So I got back to studying, and the first year or two was recovering ehat I had lost not speaking zjapanese for half a decade.
Now I am using games as a way to study. I study them like a textbook. I realize this is not the most useful Japanese and I wouldn’t recommend a beginner pearning common phrases from games. But for just bulking up and reinforcing your vocabulary, especially idiomatic phrases, they’re awesome.
I experimented with lots of methods and I think this year I finally came across the best one.
I watch about 15 minutes from the spoken dialogue (movie version) of the game. I make flashcards based off that and study them. Then I watch again and review. Then I put the words on a spreadsheet and finally I play the game. When I get towards the final big reveals I switch to playing first and reviewing after, just to keep it fun.
A full JRPG game is incredibly time consuming like this, but no more time consuming than serious study and probavly just as effective when you are at my level.
It really helps with the words you don’t need to use but are likely to come across, or words you can use but don’t have to (like “profound” and “perplexing”).
I started with Tales of Vesperia, a series I had never played because I wasn’t super eager to get through it. Later I tried Persona 5 but it was takingn way too long because I hadn’t developed a good routine, and it’s one of the longest JRPG’s. Now I am focused on Xenoblade 2, though I plan to go back and review Tales of Vesperia and Persona 2 as I finish th is game and move on to Persona 4 or Xenoblade 3.
I learn about 25 new words a day while reviewing the 25 from yesterday and another 50 from much earlier.
I must have learned about 3000 words these past 2 years. It would have been more if I figured out this rhythm earlier. I think once I review all 3000 and learn another 2000-3000, the amount of time needed to study will be greatly reduced because half of the “new” words won’t be new anymore.
The goal is to learn about 10,000 and then start focusing on learning other languages again. For now I want a list of 5000 new words I feel comfortable with by the end of 2026. And hopefully I can finish 10,000 by 2027.
すべてのことが、ここ2か月ほど計画よりもずっとゆっくり進んでいます。唯一本当に順調に進んでいるのは、日本語の勉強です。
ときどき、「まだ日本語を勉強している理由」を自分でも説明しにくくなることがあります。2010年にはすでに会話レベルになっていて、真剣に勉強し始めてからもう10年近く経っています。
5年ほど経ったころに明確な停滞期があり、6年目以降は6〜8年ほどのブランクがありました。その当時は中国語や、いずれヨーロッパの言語にも集中したいと思っていました。
しかし、人生は変わるものです。ある計画がうまくいかず、結局また日本に戻ってきました。表面的には同じ場所でしたが、テクノロジーの進化が人々の交流の仕方を変え、厳しい経済状況が社会の風景をも変えていました。
今回はもっと深く掘り下げたいと思いました。
前回は「日本人のように考える」ことを目指し、社交的にもたくさんの時間とエネルギーを費やしました。今回は、言語と自分自身への理解をより深めながら、さらに深いレベルで学びたいと思ったのです。
それで再び勉強を始め、最初の1〜2年は5年間話していなかったことで失った感覚を取り戻す期間でした。
今はゲームを使って勉強しています。まるで教科書のように分析します。これは必ずしも実用的な日本語ではないと分かっていますし、初心者にゲームで日常表現を覚える方法はおすすめしません。でも、語彙力を増やしたり、慣用表現を定着させたりするには最高です。
いろいろな方法を試してきましたが、今年ようやく最適なやり方を見つけたと思います。
まず、ゲームのセリフ（ムービー部分）を15分ほど観ます。そこから単語帳を作り、暗記します。そしてもう一度観て復習。その後、単語をスプレッドシートにまとめ、最後にゲームをプレイします。物語の終盤や大きな展開が近づいたら、楽しさを保つために「プレイしてから復習する」ように切り替えます。
こうした方法で1本のJRPGを進めるのは非常に時間がかかりますが、本格的な勉強と比べても大差なく、私のレベルでは同じくらい効果的だと思います。
この方法は「自分で使う必要はないけれどよく目にする単語」や、「使えるけど使う機会が少ない単語」（たとえば “profound（深遠な）” や “perplexing（ややこしい）” のようなもの）を覚えるのに役立ちます。
最初は『テイルズ オブ ヴェスペリア』から始めました。このシリーズは未プレイでしたが、そこまで急いでやりたいわけでもなかったからです。その後『ペルソナ5』にも挑戦しましたが、当時はルーティンが確立しておらず、作品自体も長いため、あまり進みませんでした。今は『ゼノブレイド2』に集中していますが、終わったら『テイルズ オブ ヴェスペリア』や『ペルソナ2』を復習しつつ、『ペルソナ4』や『ゼノブレイド3』に進む予定です。
1日に新しい単語を25個覚え、前日の25個を復習し、さらに以前の50個を見直しています。
この2年間でおそらく3000語ほど覚えました。もっと早くこのリズムを掴めていれば、さらに多く覚えられたと思います。3000語を復習しつつ、さらに2000〜3000語を覚えれば、「新しい単語」の半分が既知のものになるため、学習時間も大幅に減るはずです。
最終的な目標は1万語習得。その後はまた他の言語の勉強に戻りたいと考えています。とりあえず2026年末までに5000語を新たに「使いこなせる」と感じられるようにし、2027年までに1万語達成を目指しています。

Wow, I find it incredible that you've been studying a language for so many years without taking classes. It takes almost infinite patience to persevere. What's more, Japanese has the added difficulty of using a different and multiplied alphabet, so in reality each new word is several... Most people who practise other languages do so with books or films. The closest thing to a video game that I can think of is Duolingo. 😂 I tried using it to improve my English, but I'm terrible at keeping up with it and I get bored with the repetitions. I encourage you to keep going with this great goal, you've already reached an important milestone. And as you say, once you progress a little further, the pace will be faster. Go for it!
