Recently, I have mentioned the anime "Gungrave" on several occasions. A little-known gem (or at least now, although even as a teenager, it was not a very popular title), which disappeared somewhere inundated with other titles. As I often like to say on the example of "The Witcher" - a good title, in some respects even very good, but it is not enough to break into the consciousness of the mass audience or did not get a chance (unlike DBZ or the game "Wild Hunt" ", which came out at the right time and place). I would rate "Gungrave" even better than "The Witcher" (I do not compare these titles to myself, but to other representatives of my group) ... At least up to a point. It is true that I have not seen this anime since college and there are many indications that I will watch it after the new year. Nevertheless, I am unlikely to change my mind about the flashback. I will add that they are brilliant, I have never seen better ones.
I recommend this anime for 2 reasons. 1. is a great story about the mafia. Kind of like "Scarface" only in the manga version. Two buddies from the poor working in the lower mafia structures come to the top. And we're talking about a really big mafia, or in fact a mafia that has turned into a corporation. In addition, we have cool characters here, which add charm to a very dense and dark atmosphere. The story is brutal, it shows the truth about life and people - about what kind of pranks people can be for their own satisfaction or to feed ambition. The characters are my betrayal the second biggest advantage of this title (next to the depiction of the mafia, high level and climate) - they are not polite, they are not idealized, they behave like people who are in their place could behave. 2. it's like screwing up a great story by staying true to the original game. I myself am a supporter of the best possible film adaptation of the story, but sometimes it is unnecessary - the most important thing is the new work, not its compatibility with the original. If the latter is harmful to the former, it must be sacrificed (or changed in relation to the original). Nobody will take the prototype from us, and we can get an interesting look at the source material. In the end, nothing will happen if you change it more or less and add various great things - such as flashbacks showing how the events from the game on which the anime was based happened.
Ostatnio zdarza mi się przy różnych okazjach wspominać anime "Gungrave". Mało znana perełka (a przynajmniej obecnie, aczkolwiek nawet jak byłem nastolatkiem, to nie był to zbyt popularny tytuł), która gdzieś zniknęła zasypana pod innymi tytułami. Jak to często lubię mówić na przykładzie "Wiedźmina" - dobry tytuł, w niektórych aspektach nawet bardzo dobry, ale to za mało, by przebić się do świadomości masowego widza lub nie dostał na to szansy (w przeciwieństwie do DBZ, czy gry "Wild Hunt", które wyszły w odpowiednim miejscu i czasie). "Gungrave" oceniłbym nawet jeszcze lepiej niż "Wiedźmina" (nie porównuję tych tytułów do siebie, tylko z innymi przedstawicielami swojej grupy)... A przynajmniej do pewnego momentu. Co prawda nie widziałem tego anime od bodajże studiów i wiele na to wskazuje, że obejrzę je sobie po nowym roku. Niemniej, raczej nie zmienię swojego zdania co do retrospekcji. Dodam, że są one genialne, chyba nigdy nie widziałem lepszych.
Polecam to anime z 2 powodów. 1. to świetna historia o mafii. Coś jak "Scarface", tylko że w mangowej wersji. Dwóch kumpli pochodzących z biedoty, pracujących w dolnych strukturach mafijnych, dochodzą na jej szczyt. A mówimy tu o naprawdę dużej mafii, czy w zasadzie mafii która przeistoczyła się w korporację. Ponadto mamy tu zajebiste postacie, którym dodaje uroku bardzo gęsty i mroczny klimat. Historia jest brutalna, pokazuje prawdę o życiu i ludziach - o tym jakimi chujami potrafią być ludzie dla własnej satysfakcji lub nakarmienia ambicji. Postacie to moim zdraniem druga największa zaleta tego tytułu (obok przedstawienia mafii, wysokiego poziomu i klimatu) - nie są ugrzecznione, nie są wyidealizowane, zachowują się tak, jak mogliby się zachować ludzie będący na ich miejscu. 2. to jak spieprzyć świetną historię, przez wierność pierwowzorowi w postaci gry. Sam jestem zwolennikiem możliwie jak najlepszej ekranizacji historii, ale czasami jest to zbędne - najważniejsze jest nowe dzieło, a nie jego zgodność z pierwowzorem. Jeśli to drugie szkodzi pierwszemu, to trzeba to poświęcić (lub zmienić względem oryginału). Pierwowzoru nikt nam nie zabierze, a możemy dostać za to ciekawe spojrzenie na materiał źródłowy. W końcu nic się nie stanie, jeśli się go mniej lub bardziej zmieni i doda różne, świetne rzeczy - jak np. retrospekcje ukazujące, jak doszło do wydarzeń znanych z gry, na bazie której powstało to anime.
Hi @herosik. while browsing the community I saw your post and of course it was of interest to me. I recently did a review on the same series and I like to keep those options open for all of us who like anime. especially for the kids nowadays who may not have seen something different from shonen, which although it is one of the most popular styles may not represent the best work of the Japanese in this subject and as they say: good stories will always be good stories.
I totally agree with you. Today kids watch more often shounen or other, not very ambitious titles. They have been in the past, and there's nothing wrong with them, but since there used to be less anime in the past, you didn't have to spend so much time looking for good anime. Anyway, you're right about "Gungrave" - amazing story.
1 more thing - If you are looking for a good anime for winter holidays, I recommend "Gungrave". Great mafia story for adult viewers. Just don't watch 1 episode because it's torn out of the middle of the series - start with 2 episode.
