Sword Art Online: From Triumph to Disappointment

Spoilers ahead!

Today, I'll be discussing an anime that I liked at first but somehow ended up disappointing me. The name of the anime is Sword Art Online. I hope you have heard of it. It's a virtual game-based anime about a boy named Kirito who gets stuck in a game. All the other players are also trapped in the game, and whoever dies in the battlefield dies in real life. Everyone is wearing a gear helmet to connect with the game, and this helmet is the main connection to the human body.

Our main protagonist, Kirito, hides his level in the game. On his journey, he meets a girl named Asuna. He starts to join battles with her, and each time, Kirito shows excellent performance. However, he has to conceal his level so he can stay low and not reveal too much of his skills. Otherwise, people would feel unfair as Kirito said he is just a mere player.

The story was going fine, and it was something new. This anime is very old; Season 1 was released in 2012, at a time when this type of anime was hardly seen. What I liked about this anime was its animation and storyline. It was something different. I have always wanted to play a game where I can physically feel my presence and do everything on my own. I've rarely liked story games because I don't get to choose what I want. I don't like options; I like freedom in games. So, Sword Art Online was showing the type of game I wanted. But that doesn't mean that if I die in a game, I would want to die in real life too.

I loved the chemistry between Asuna and Kirito, their bond grew gradually there was no rush. I really wanted to see them together even when they are out of the game. Whenever, I saw them together I felt overwhelmed. They both were living like a husband and wife. I felt their connection was genuine.

credits

The most heartbreaking part was when Asuna was captured and could not return to the real world. It made me sad, and I also felt anger. Anyway, I have always shipped them together, so I've always wanted a happy ending. The main protagonist was really a cool character; I liked his dialogue and every part he played. The fighting scenes were insane—I could barely take my eyes off them.

Season 1 accomplished all my desires, but then when Season 2 came along, I became very disappointed. It felt like I was watching a harem anime, with all the girls wavering around Kirito. I did not like it much, as the story was not very interesting anymore. It always felt like Sword Art Online should have ended at Season 1 because the other seasons did not make the impactful impression I had before.

credits

I am not satisfied with the other seasons; I feel that they could have done something better, but it turned into something else. I had high expectations for season 2, but all my expectations went to waste. I really don't like the other seasons; the storyline is not that good. I wish they had worked harder on seasons 2 and 3. I would rate season 1 a 10 out of 10, but I do not prefer to rate the other seasons.

I really loved the song selections for SAO; they were mesmerizing. Whenever I heard the songs, I felt so good about them. One of my favorites is Innocence - Eir Aoi. I would say you should also give it a try.

Anyway, this was my personal opinion. You might like the other seasons of Sword Art Online, but I personally wouldn't recommend them to others, except for season 1.

Thanks for reading 🌷

Sword Art Online is also one of the anime I feel like people don't talk so much about. The anime has a good story and battle scene. I can relate to the part where you said there was a great change in the first and second seasons.
The second season was when he had to enter the game again and I think it was like an elven world.

There was a part where he had to use both gun and sword; I don't know if I am right. It is an old anime and it been a long time I watched it. I believe the anime is not completed or I was the one who didn't finish it. But I feel there should be a new season.

Yes, I don't remember quite well, but I recall a gun and a sword from the anime I watched a long time ago.

Yeah
This was an amazing read

Thank you 🥺

Same opinion I honestly enjoyed it for the first season also if kirito it's a kind of character that I find too obvious by the way the others seasons don't satisfy me at all I just watch all because I hoped in a better plot twist..

Same here, but nothing better happened in the new seasons.

Thanks for your opinion 🌷🥰

I totally agree with you. Sword Art Online started with a very innovative and catching idea, but I feel that after the first season it deviated quite a bit from what made it special. That deep connection between Kirito and Asuna was one of the nicest pillars, but then it seemed like every female character had to be interested in Kirito, and that took away from the strength of the story. I would have loved it if they had focused more on the development of the virtual world and the moral dilemmas it posed. Still, the first season is unforgettable!✨

Yes! I still love the season 1 but I really don't like the other seasons, I tried a lot to watch but I could not continue. Anyway, thank you for your valuable opinion.

Take love 🥰🌷

I have no idea about Sword Art Online, but this experience it must be magnificent. Personally, I'm a big fan of manga. I'm sure I'd enjoy it a lot if I had the chance to experience it live.

Hello!
I haven't actually seen this series, but based on what you've told us, I think I'll try to find it and suggest it to my friends.
Have a lovely weekend!

Yes, I think you would like to watch season 1 of it because it's great, but I don't know about the other seasons.

Ok.
Thanks a lot!

You're most welcome 🤗

Thank you!
Have a good night!

I feel he is a bit underrated, he should be given more opportunities. Good post! 🧡

Yes, that's true.

I agree with you about how disappointing this anime ended up being. While it's true that its main decline was its second season, But with the third season, they seemed to try to improve a bit. Still, the change and/or experiment they made in this last case caught my attention. However, what I didn't like was the way they demeaned the supporting characters, especially the female ones. That's not to mention the "Ships" or the unnecessary fanservice. There are also parts of the story where it didn't make sense for so many things to happen (like the case of Kirito's sister in the war 💀). In short, this is an anime with many flaws, but it still managed to make quite an impact on the anime world at the time. In fact, if it weren't for SAO, we wouldn't have masterpieces like Shangri-La Frontier, which is ten thousand times better.

Excellent post.

Well, that's true; his sister has weird feelings for her brother, blushing and all. I didn't like it, but I always skipped her part, lol.

The truth is that the central idea was pretty good for a brutal series, but the execution was not at all the best, it became a Gary Stu and then a generic harem.

I remember being quite enamored with the series in the first few episodes, but then things got really boring and predictable. The following seasons didn't improve much, except for the season where they explore more the theme of sentience and the dilemma of when an AI becomes conscious and whether it should be considered life or not, however, that season also fell into the same thing on several occasions.

I feel exactly the same as you. I wish it had turned out well, but it did not meet my expectations.

IMHO Sword Art Online have some interesting moments, especially in the movie. Here is my take: https://ecency.com/hive-158489/@onlyjob/sword-art-online-2012-25-episodes-sword-art-online-movie-ordinal-scale-2017
