Kraken, a monster or a reality?
For thousands of years monsters have lived in the collective imagination of man, even the Kraken is a monstrous recurring marine figure. The Kraken is part of the environment I love most, the sea and since I was a child I have been fascinated by it but without fears of any kind.

I imagined it gigantic, with tentacles bigger than the hawsers of merchant ships, a huge head and two curious and not at all threatening eyes. I always thought that he, the so-called monster, has lived for centuries in the depths of the oceans and that we men have gone to break his tranquility and balance.
Why should the Kraken be peaceful?
It has the same value as the White Whale, Moby Dick, made the object of man's lust for power, a symbol of nature's resistance to man's continuous prevarications, his infinite pride and the boundless presumption of being the only living being on the planet . The monsters are welcome, the killer viruses are welcome, when man goes beyond the rules of delicate natural balances, of ecosystems.
Sometimes the Earth needs to breathe, but let's go back to the Kraken.
This gigantic cephalopod, capable of wrapping an entire ship with its huge tentacles, was spotted since ancient times and the remains of Greek vases from the 5th century BC demonstrate this. It is common practice to attribute the birth of the Kraken myth in relatively modern times, in Norway, in the 18th century.
But the first mention of the marine beast is cited by the great scholar and naturalist Gaio Plinio Secondo said Pliny the Elder, who in his first encyclopedic naturalistic treatise "Naturalis Historia" written in the first decades AD. and published in 77 AD it speaks of a large tree that lives underwater with its roots like tentacles.

The Kraken appears in many adventure novels such as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea or Moby Dick, but also in cinema as in the series Pirates of the Caribbean in Dead Man's Chest and At World's End.

In conclusion as you can understand I am for the protection of the Kraken and I hope that our monster can continue to frighten and destroy the ships that break the silence.

Sono millenni che i mostri albergano nell'immaginario collettivo dell'uomo, anche il Kraken è una figura mostruosa marina ricorrente. Il Kraken fa parte dell'ambiente che amo di più, il mare e fin da bambino ne sono stato affascinato ma senza paure di alcun tipo.
Lo immaginavo gigantesco, con tentacoli più grossi delle gomene delle navi mercantili, una testa enorme e due occhi curiosi e per niente minacciosi. Ho sempre pensato che lui, il cosiddetto mostro, vive da secoli nelle profondità degli oceani e che noi uomini siamo andati a rompere la sua tranquillità i suoi equilibri.
Per quale motivo il Kraken dovrebbe essere pacifico?
Ha lo stesso valore della Balena Bianca, Moby Dick, fatta oggetto della brama di potere dell'uomo, simbolo della resistenza della natura alle continue prevaricazioni dell'uomo, al suo infinito orgoglio e alla smisurata presunzione di essere l'unico essere vivente del pianeta. Ben vengano i mostri, ben vengano i virus killer, quando l'uomo travalica le regole dei delicati equilibri naturali, degli ecosistemi.
Ogni tanto la Terra ha bisogno di respirare, ma torniamo al Kraken.
Questo gigantesco cefalopode, capace di avvolgere con i suoi enormi tentacoli una intera nave, fu avvistato fin dall'antichità e lo dimostrano resti di vasi Greci del 5° secolo a.C. E' di uso comune attribuire la nascita del mito del Kraken in epoca relativamente moderna, in Norvegia, nel XVIII sec.
Ma la prima menzione della bestia marina è citata dal grande studioso e naturalista Gaio Plinio Secondo detto Plinio il Vecchio, il quale nel suo primo trattato naturalistico enciclopedico Naturalis Historia redatto nei primi decenni d.C. e pubblicato nel 77 d.C. parla di un grande albero che vive sott'acqua con le radici come tentacoli.
Il Kraken compare in molti romanzi di avventura come Ventimila Leghe sotto i mari o Moby Dick, ma anche nel cinema come nella serie de "I pirati dei Caraibi" in Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. Concludendo come potete capire io sono per la salvaguardia del Kraken e auspico che il nostro mostro possa continuare ad impaurire e a distruggere le navi che rompono il silenzio degli abissi.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was my favorite childhood book ... all the memories came back upon seeing your beautiful kraken ... also a doomed but witty romance ... I was told I was too deep ... and that led to "kraken" jokes until I indeed returned to my mysterious depths ... good memories beyond the pain, all brought back with this watercolor! Well done!
