Forsaken

Introduction

Hello everyone. It’s been quite a while since my last time I posted.

I’ve been creating art for quite time now, and I’m really happy with my latest piece, 'Forsaken.' I decided it was time to share it here. It’s a mix of free stock images and AI, processed and painted over in Photoshop. I’ll share a bit more about my process later in this post.

This piece is inspired by all the people I’ve met along my life who I feel, never received the gratitude they deserved. It’s sad, but it seems too common that those who dedicate their lives to others often find themselves alone when they finally need someone, everyone just disappears. Sometimes, I wonder if this is an inherent human trait, or the result of the individualistic society we live in. It’s probably a bit of both.

So, this piece is dedicated to those who have been left behind. I highly recommend opening the original image and zooming in to appreciate the details; you can also see some selected details below.

Hola a todos, realmente hace mucho tiempo que no he publicado nada.

Desde hace bastante tiempo, he estado haciendo arte.

The Process

To create this piece, I needed an image with a painterly and somehow abstract look to use as a base, so I decided to use my Gemini subscription to have more control over the result. I use Gemini for all sorts of things, like helping me debug code or correcting my English. Once I had the base and had retouched it by hand, I needed high-resolution textures to work with. The free image section on Unsplash literally has tens of thousands of textures to choose from.

Once all the material is ready, the process is about integrate the textures into the base image of the figure. Photoshop offers a wide variety of layer blending modes, which are ideal for texturing. When using a blending mode, Photoshop compares each pixel with the corresponding one in the two layers you are trying to blend. By understanding how these modes work, you can integrate textures to achieve some very interesting effects. For example, one of the modes I used is 'Soft Light.' This mode takes a pixel from the layer the effect is applied to, takes its color and luminosity, and blends it subtly with the color and luminosity of the pixel in the layer below.

Other techniques I’ve used include layer masks to hide or reveal parts of an image, as well as adjustments to color, luminosity, sharpening, blurring, and also other more advanced methods to enhance the graininess of the textures. I also used manual painting, as seen in the aura around the protagonist's head. As a final touch, I used some photography filters.

Below, you can see a screenshot of the work in Photoshop, showing the layers and the material I used to create it. I hope you enjoyed it.

Sort:

Brilliant piece. Suggestion of a halo (or is that just what I choose to see?)

I have to say I think of my mother. How many of us will think of our mothers? Worked so hard, under very, very difficult circumstances. When she died, everybody said she was a saint. But when she lived she was not much considered. So modest, so humble.

Sorry to say, I didn't show the great respect and regard she deserved until the final months of her life. I took care of her, but that great respect she had earned--that was missing. I was lucky there was warning that the end was near and I was able to show that respect, but so, so late.

Maybe I'm saying too much. But just want to let you know your picture spoke to me.

You are not saying too much, your comment has made my day. There is nothing better than feel that somebody connected with with the feelings I put in my artwork. the personal experience you have sahred and the history behind my piece, are different, but yet, the feelings are the same in both cases. I think that's the magic of be human beings, and the arts as well.

And you are right, the halo you choose to see is in fact and halo, and represents holiness.

Alhought it is not the main subject of the artwork, I can relate to your experience, I went trough something similar with my grandparents. Maybe I was a bit late, but also was able to acknowledge them and give back all the love they gave me. I'm sure this is something that probably has happened to most of the people, it seems we don't fully appreciate what we have until we are about to lose it.

Thank you very much for your nice comment, for be open about share your experience, and I'm very glad my artwork has spoken to you.

Have a great day!

I love work that makes use of textures, and yours really has turned out spectacularly!!😍

Thank you! 🤗

I love textures too, and to be honest the rock texture I found, is a winner by itself. It gives a lot of spice to my artwork.

The rock textures are really good, they look like old, antique or crumpled paper. I love those too! It’s great that you’ve started posting again.

Thank you has been quite a while... I like a lot rocks with interesting patterns, and the black veins on this one are awesome.
