The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance - it is the illusion of knowledge.

- Daniel J. Boorstin -

I've lived on this planet for 146 years so far and in that time have learned a thing or two about a thing or two. A lot of those things are external to myself and some of them are all about me and it's the latter that has, at times, meant the most when applied to the journey forwards.

There's a lot of people who don't learn those self-lessons though, or ignore and shun them and that often leads to a sub-optimal future and life generally - it's best to learn from mistakes and failures and to create a better future from those lessons in my opinion. So many don't take that journey of self-discovery and they lives are somewhat less for it.

So, because I'm interested, I thought I'd put it out there to you wise and knowledgeable folks and see what your thoughts and experiences might have been.

In the comments below, tell me what aspects about yourself you have identified that required changing to ensure you had a better future ahead.

Ideally, you'll talk about things in your own personality, thoughts, attitudes and actions that were impacting you negatively and which you changed and improved to develop and grow into a better version of yourself. Was it a difficult process or easy, and what results did you gain?

lol 146 years...you got a lot of living to do yet.

As I get older it has come to my attention that I'm not as good at multitasking as I used to be. I was organized and efficient, but as time goes on, I am easily distracted. As a result, I can do one thing really well, or several things with great mediocrity. Now, as soon as I remember how to get back home, I will figure out just what I'm gonna do about it.

Hopefully you made it home.

Do you think the decline in multitasking is because there's no immediacy to some tasks these days and that you want to get the most out of each thing you do?

Yeah for me that'll have to be my consistency. I struggle to follow through with anything these days, sad part is that it wasn't always like that.

Interesting. I wonder if it's just that priorities have changed or there's some other factor that has caused the shift.

I go into too much detail. No, I won't elaborate. I'm getting better.

Lol.

There are a couple things that damages me and those around me:

  1. Anger control(Lack of it)
  2. Patience and tolerance.(Lack of it).
  3. Valuation of what I have rather than what I don't.( Lack of it).

Still on the fight to get over it.

It's good to know what aspects require change and I'm knowing them they can be worked on.

Relying too much on the others for tasks rather than do them myself... They ended up crappy done, not as i wanted them to be done so I just do everything myself now even if I don't have time

Blindly trust others, now I follow my instinct, a blind trust has brought damage and needless suffer

I think many people do that these days, rely on others rather than themselves.

I try to be as self-reliant as possible but I don't know how to do everything so there's always an element of reliance.

First, I will tell you that change processes were never easy, because I first had to discard the bad, push it away, change my habits, and then establish new ones. The first step is the most difficult: unlearning.

Things I've changed: Putting things off, delaying them. Negative thoughts, such as “this is very difficult, I won't be able to do it”... focusing on the worst-case scenario and, above all, worrying too much about things that are beyond my control.

When I realised that this was leading me down the wrong path and bringing me bad things, I began to change little by little and discovered that this had been instilled in me by my family, but that inside me there was a happy and positive woman. There are still traces of my tendency to worry excessively, but I am controlling it.

Negative thoughts can be a fast-track to disaster...best to replace it with positive thought and self-talk.

I completely agree, they were leading me to total disaster, but I was able to realise this and turn the situation around. Self-awareness is a great help.

I'm quite easily distracted. The rise of the smartphone therefor hasn’t been a good development for me. And I’m quite prone to addictions as well. I easily lose myself in silly games or doomscrolling apps.
That’s why I no longer have games or social media on my phone and I’ve turned off all notifications from messaging apps.
That really helps keeping my focus on things that matter.

I think you and a lot of other people as well; and smart phones don't help as you point out.

I don't have that issue myself and can be quite disciplined when it comes to getting things done. I schedule time for certain things, researching a vehicle for instance, and when the time elapsed I'm done and move on to whatever's next. It probably sounds quite regimented putting it that way, it's not really, just that I like to make the most of my time and blocking out time for things helps.

I like what you said about turning off notifications, I do the same.

For me, it's about not expecting anything at all from HUMAN. I used to trust others very easily, and my expectations from close peoples were/are high. Life taught me lessons that I needed to learn long back but I'm glad that I'm getting the lessons late at least.

I'm still in the phase of changing this aspect of my life, hoping I'll succeed.

Anyway, are you really 146 years old?

Trust is something that should be carefully placed, especially when it comes to other people.

And yeah, 146...I'm starting to slow down now, but still rockin' it.
