"Most people work just hard enough not to get fired and get paid just enough money not to quit." - George Carlin

You're plodding along nicely just minding your own business and getting your job done and then, BAM you're fucken fired!

Has this happened to you?

Unfortunately it's a fact of life for most people and being fired, laid off or made redundant happens for many reasons, warranted and some unwarranted. People get fired unjustly all the time and a business downturn is often responsible for lay-offs and redundancies making people the collateral damage of what others up the chain have done.

It's rarely pleasant but it can often work to one's advantage.

We tend to get set in our ways and with jobs simply keep going back because that's what we've always done. Getting fired can open new doors by having been pushed out of one's current situation. It's not always a bad thing and I know many people who have actually turned it into a great advantage and found themselves in a better situation in their professional life and personal also.

Have you been fired, laid off or made redundant?

If you would like to comment about your own experiences or from the perspective of a family member or friend do so below. Talk about why you were fired and how it affected you, was negative or positive, or maybe explain how and why you were unfairly dismissed from a job. It's your choice what you want to comment about, so if you're inclined to comment you know what to do below.

I was going to say no (as all my jobs prior to my business were temp/holiday/fill in, all the jobs through my business were contract and my current job is casual) but then realised that technically I did but also technically didn't, it was a bit of a weird situation XD I was working on this project with a bunch of people that had also been hired to work on different parts of this project, and then one day one of the guys told me not to worry about coming in so I was like yeh okay? And double checked with the supervisor and he said oh weird but yeh should be cool to work from home so I did.

Then next thing I know I "wasn't needed anymore" so I was like okay I'm done then? (from memory I was on a contract that was finishing up in not long anyway) and then AFTER that I suddenly had a bunch of the crew messaging me asking if I was okay and I was like I'm fine? What's happened?! Turned out the guy that said not to worry about coming in basically was trying to take over the entire project replacing everyone on the team with members of his own team (a couple of which were already working on it with him from the outset) and I was the easiest one to cull because front end is pretty easy, and then the person they replaced me with turned out to be terrible at what I was doing. I heard the dba went out with a bang and then I don't know what happened after that.

I'm a terrible person, after trying and failing to sort that one out in my head for a bit I just got on with my other contracts, I think I was meant to be more upset about it than I was?

I wanted to ask how about you and I guess there's a non-zero chance but I also can't imagine you ever getting fired XD

The old DCM - Don't come Monday huh?

It's funny to watch a power play, someone come along and start flexing, and even funnier when it goes wrong. What's not funny is when that power-tripper's fuckassery has an effect on others, usually negative.

I think it's important to find a (fast) way past it so the situation doesn't keep holding a person back; you seemed to deal with it pretty well.

I wanted to ask how about you...

I've not been fired for performance issues although was let go because of a power-tripper's fucktardiness. I wasn't best pleased. The funny thing is, four months later that guy resigned with mental health issues and has had a torrid time since then. Even funnier, I was asked to come back to the company because I, "always did such an amazing job," and, needless to say, I declined - albeit it with professionalism. No point burning bridges.

Other than that, I've always been one to make the move under my own steam, never been afraid to challenge myself and always do the best I possibly can. My employers are always content. Actually, I got a pay rise this week, like...a really good one. Really, really good. The letter that came along with it was (almost) as rewarding as the raise itself as it was super-complimentary. It makes the effort I put in feel vindicated.

Sounds very karmic.

Even funnier, I was asked to come back to the company because I, "always did such an amazing job,"

Then why 🙄

Actually, I got a pay rise this week, like...a really good one. Really, really good. The letter that came along with it was (almost) as rewarding as the raise itself as it was super-complimentary. It makes the effort I put in feel vindicated.

That is awesome and I can't pretend that I'm anywhere near being surprised XD

There was a power struggle, in the mind of that character anyway - felt threatened by me, someone he thought was better qualified for his job...because I actually was. He took it upon himself to remove me through nefarious methods and a lot of lying before anything else happened that affected him negatively. It was all in his mind though and baseless. It was just me either, others too.

Oh well, the fellow has probably hanged himself by now and the world is a better place. I know he was going badly. It felt pretty good seeing the two highest people in the national company asking me to come back as they "never should have let what happened happen." The word "no" has a lot of power sometimes. It felt good saying it. I could go back still I guess, but won't.

That just...wow O_O

Definitely good for the two highest people acknowledging that something went catastrophic and hope they managed to fix whatever they needed to try to mitigate future problems like that. But yeh given something like that I think I would have definitely said no too.

That is one thing I have not had to deal with much in this 34+ years of freight relocation with just over 30 now being "The Boss" as an Owner Operator.

Many days I have thought about doing a little firing but I would just have to rehire myself before the day was done.

Can you imagine the process though?

KT: "Cunt, you're fired!"
Also KT: "Fuck you, I hated working here anyway."
KT: "Well now you don't have to worry. Get the fuck out and don't come back!"
Also KT: "I will...I hope you fucken die you asshole."
KT: "Fark off ya pelican."

Later...

KT: "Hey fuckstick, ya want your job back?"
Also KT: "Yeah I do, yer wanker!"
KT: "Well get your ass in the cab and start fucken driving."
Also KT: "OK."

Exactly.!!

i laughed so hard i think i peed a little...untitled.gif

When your staring down the big "SIX OH" You will Feel Me Feel the Pee... 🙄😳

Here until like 10 years ago you could only get fired if your work place was going bankrupt or if you did huge problems, like harm or damage on purpose, cheat... I mean heavy things, not little mistakes and such... If you would get fired for little things you would sue your workplace and win and get your work back... I'm still having this contract, so my ass is pretty safe, they can't come tell me "you are fired"

New contracts instead work like in the US, where the boss can wake up on the bad mood and just come and tell you "fired" just by paying a penalty

My wife lost her previous work for bankrupt, old contract, she has been changing 2 jobs, shitty ones, then finally found the current one which is indeed better than the lost one, better wage, more benefits, bigger company... It was tough until she found it, you don't feel stability

There needs to be reasons here too otherwise the "Fair Work" department can get involved, although reasons can be fabricated right?

Yep and they can also just harass you without doing anything illegal, making a nightmare workplace and force you to change

Some workplaces certainly are terrible. I've been lucky mostly, but there's been elements of places I've worked that haven't been very good at all, and I've seen a few people get treated terribly.

I survived a deep cull late last year after 13 years service. Glad to still be employed, but the package would've put a huge dent in my mortgage.

Yeah, I know a few who who wer saved from redundancy. Packages are ok if service is lengthy, but if anither job can't be found...could be problematic.

I was made redundant once in my penultimate job, but we all knew it was coming due to the change in direction the company was going. They tried to move to a new businesses area which was the way to go with all the big companies but didn't manage to make much in roads, so had to drop back to focus on their basic bread and butter which they were quite good at.

That was the only time I had a three month notice contract, something that I wasn't too pleased with when I signed up, but in the end it worked well for me.

We were given our notice in Oct, worked for another month to wrap things up and paid two months in lieu to work out our notice period. I found a new job within a month at a much larger MNC with a little pay increase. Then my sister won a week's Christmas cruise holiday but couldn't go coz she'd booked another holiday already, so she gifted that to us. And I started my new job in January.

Not a bad experience, I'd say 😁

With results like that is be happy to be made redundant all the time! Of course, it's not always like that, I know people who have been out of work for a long time after redundancy or being fired.

But you? Cleaned up...and got a bloody cruise as well!

Legend.

Yeah, I was very lucky, and the new job was a slightly different role that I hadn't done before, so it was a new experience for me. All good in the end

Of course I've never been fired, but I did have to fire an employee once, one of our ex-heroine addicts. He managed to steal my brother's safe key, get one cut, and then regularly steal from the safe. It took a hidden camera to catch him and even then, a lot of hoop jumping before we could legally fire him.

He sounds like an asshole.

When I've fired people I always said to myself that it was them that fired themselves (through their choices and actions) and I'm just doing the paperwork.

Well... I remember I was fired because the shop where I worked closed, but in my opinion it shouldn't have closed, I was making a lot of progress, but the boss thought I wasn't meeting the objectives he had set. The problem was the bad choice of location, a place for offices and not a place for consumption or a family home. It hurt me a lot in the beginning but it was the impetus to start things on my own. I have very good memories of that job!

People like to shift blame, maybe that's what your boss was doing?

I think yes, the business went on and on but I didn't see that. I was practically in charge, I was looking after and collecting money, I saw everything, it was going very well.

or maid redundant?

Listen to this guy with all his domestic house staff, I had no idea who I've been dealing with all this time.

My advice to everyone is to always take a package if it's on offer... you don't want to be one of the ones left behind after all the good people go.

Yeah, one must know when one is on the S.S. Titanic. Best not to go down with the band.

I was once and it was definitely a kick in the nuts. I had been told when my boss retired I was going to slide into his position. Then he retired and they brought him back as a consultant. After a few more shake ups at the highest level, they eventually cut my job to part time because tech apparently wasn't important in the early 2000's. It's fine though because it led me to the job I have now that I will retire from after 25+ years and it's where I met my wife, so I can't complain!

The old, bring him back as a consultant trick.

Fuckers.

The Fallout If you've been fired for your inefficiency, okay, you asked for it... but I know a woman who went to HR and immediately started firing good people, all to document that she was working 💼. She got rid of everyone, and in the end, they fired her because they realized she was the problem. But that took like 10 years, causing a lot of damage... the owners thought she was doing a good job

Before that, she went to a shoe store and started firing good people, friends of the owner... and when he found out, he fired her. But it took days, and some people never got their jobs back... there's a lot of people like that, messing with others' lives

Is that fair? No, because no matter how well you do your job, it doesn't justify bad behavior... and because someone doesn't like you, you're not gonna make their life impossible until they quit

But like you said, sometimes bad things happen... like my friend Stacy... if they hadn't fired her from that crappy job, she wouldn't have had her baby She says her kid wouldn't exist if she'd stayed in that toxic environment... so sometimes getting fired can be a blessing

I've heard similar stories where all the wrong people get fired and the person causing all the issues remains. Sad. Mostly it catches up with them though.

There's always new opportunities to find after being fired and a lot of time a person can be better off as you say.

I left two previous jobs on my own, I was never fired.

I quit because I was dissatisfied with the relationships at my first job and I was dissatisfied with my earnings at my second job.
After that, I've been working on the third for over 15 years.

I'm very knowledgeable and have good hands, so I would probably find another job quickly if I got fired. Or I would start a small business of my own 🙂

And if I were to be fired, I would like it to be like in the case of several of my colleagues, who were declared redundant, when the company terminated their positions and gave them a hefty severance package for each year of work in the company.
I have a lot of them (years), so even that severance pay would be enough so that I don't have to worry and that I am not obliged to immediately start working at another job.

You're lucky you've never been fired.

Getting fired is a cold reminder that we’re all just line items on a spreadsheet until we decide to build something for ourselves

This feels like an AI response.

I have to translate my thoughts into English since it's not my native language, so the phrasing can come out looking a bit like a robot. I'm definitely real though!

Ah ok, that may be why. Your native language is Indian?

In India we have so many different languages, but my native one is Punjabi.

Ok, I only speak English, French and Italian.
