One Hundred Million Blocks on Hive!
I’d brag about signing the 100,000,000th block, but it wasn’t me - @deathwing nailed it ;-)
See for yourself: https://explore.openhive.network/block/100000000
Why this matters (even if you’re new here):
- Blocks are Hive’s heartbeat. At 3 seconds each, that’s ~28,800 blocks/day.
- 100,000,000 blocks ≈ 300,000,000 seconds ≈ 3,472 days ≈ 9.51 years of non-stop chain time.
Milestones & memories:
- 27 Hard Forks so far, and one of them absolutely EPIC: the birth of Hive.
- And yes, I get to brag here: I signed the block when Hive came into existence ;-)
- We’ve now produced more post-fork blocks than pre-fork (pre-fork total: 41,818,752).
- From “can we?” to “we did!” From a handful of apps to a thriving, mature ecosystem.
People & thanks:
Shout-out to fellow witnesses, devs, node operators, content creators, curators, and everyone who stuck around through the weird and the wonderful.
If you shipped code, kept nodes running, squashed a bug, wrote docs, or onboarded a friend - this is your win too! :-)
Muddy Confluence after Split
HiveFest 10 is around the corner. I’ll be there and would love to meet you and listen to your feedback.
It’s the first time in this decade that I’m flying to HiveFest instead of driving... which means it's a long way to go for Europeans.
And "I believe you can fly" too! It isn’t too late yet; tickets are still available, and even without one you can join us at ChainCulture
If you think it would be crazy to go at the last minute, then maybe you are right; but that’s another reason to join like-minded people ;-)
However, if you cannot join us in Kuala Lumpur, not all is lost. HiveBeeCon is coming to Kraków on 14-16 November.
But that is for another story. (I will post more once I'm back).
Status update and odds and ends ;-)
Mirrornet is running, HardFork 28 was applied there few times already (different instances). Minor bugs were found and fixed. 1.27.12-rc3 is now being tested. Hardfork date is set to late November but still subject to change. Test your apps against the new version (mirrornet), vote for witnesses (including me), vote for proposals (including the return proposal), be a decent human being.
The 100 millionth block on HIVE is truly a milestone worth celebrating.
We can look forward to the 200 millionth block, the 300 millionth block, and many more to come.
But I guess we probably won’t live to see the 1 billionth block — haha, how old would we be by then?
Maybe before that, we can pass our accounts and witness roles down to our children to maintain.
That would be roughly 86 years from now so I'm afraid only the youngest of us have a slight chance to witness it.
Unless in ten years we would decide to switch to one second block (no, it's not that trivial, we've been researching 2 second blocks before). And to be honest there's no practical reasons to do that.
Anyway, it's just a number, in a very weird decimal system ;-)
Maybe with the advancement of technology and medical science, our generation will be able to live long enough — hahaha.
As for producing one block per second or every two seconds, it doesn’t really feel any different from three seconds.
I remember on EOS, each witness produced six blocks in a row, making the block interval 0.5 seconds, but I think that’s pretty meaningless too.
Exactly, even though 0.5 seconds was seemingly 6x faster, it was still slower to get enough confirmation to make it irreversible, and that was even before we introduced OBI.
It is a cool milestone. Hive is an amazing thing that ought to be better known. We have something special here that defies a lot of the preconceptions about blockchain.
I will not be at this Hivefest, but I am sure we will meet again somewhere. I am cutting down on my flying.
Drive to Kraków in November then :-)
it's amazing when i hear from you a strong witness here. maybe this will be an amazing hive journey when people know about this i was shocked after i read your post..
If only people would be a little more curios about what's happening around them...
Have a good journey! The previous @hivebeecon was great. This one will be even better! :)
I'm a little afraid that we've already put the bar so high so there's nothing that could beat the first edition ;-)
Have a great time at HiveFest! 🥂
...and see you in Krakow in November! 🍻
Yay!
Hopefully, someone can see the true potential of the chain some day.
There's plenty of such someones, apparently not enough yet ;-)
Hivebeecon!!! Damn! I can't make that weekend either 😭
Oh no, what's wrong with your calendar? ;-)
What can I say? I have an active social life 😁
Could Hive sponsor game like Rohan 2.
If game producers would be on Hive they could definitely put a proposal, then we could argue whether it makes sense or not ;-)
100,000,000 blocks is some serious blockchain longevity! I've been active for 4 of those 9.5 years. Although I won't be going to HiveFest (maybe some day), I have no doubt that it will be glorious. I'm curious, where might I read the details of HF28? 😁🙏💚✨🤙
Best consistent place of course is the code, but hopefully it will have TL;DR version in release notes once the actual 1.28.0 release is ready.
Hopefully had a good time ;-)
Given votes for your comment you seem to have a lot of dedicated fans around here ;-)
