"I hate small talk with randos who sit at your table," says Stacey as they try to find a far-away, unoccupied table. "Of course, you could just ignore them, but that's even more uncomfortable."
They find an unoccupied table all the way in the back. But they are early to lunch, and tables are filling up fast.
"Ideally, you can smile and nod, maybe say hello, and they do the same. Then, you turn to your group. Then, they look down at their food. And neither of you make eye contact ever again," continues Stacey.
Jim has known Stacey for five years, but he's not sure if she wants even him to make eye contact with her. Jim notices that every table now has at least one person at it. Most have at least two groups of people. He wouldn't care at all except now he's concerned how Stacey will react once someone joins their table.
A man in his sixties, with red suspenders and a brown bow tie, sits across from them.
Stacey smiles and nods, then says, "hello."
The man says, "hello."
She turns to Jim; the man looks down at his food.
Suddenly Jim looks at the man and exclaims "You're--!" Stacey's head drops. Jim turns to Stacey. "Sorry." Then he turns back to the man. "You're Larry Tullus! You created Logg!"
"This is the guy who owns half of all Logg coins?" Stacey asks quizzically. "You don't look like someone with a $500 haircut... You don't look like someone who has ever spent more than even $5 for one. No offense."
"None taken," says the man, "I consider it a compliment. But I think you have me mixed up with someone."
"You're not Larry... What was it? Tullus?"
"Oh, I am."
Stacey looks at Jim who is noticeably embarrassed.
"Stacey," says Jim, "the CEO, Mark Suleman, is the one who has half the Logg coin. Tullus, who made it, actually got... uh..."
"I got nothing," said Tullus, matter-of-factly. He puts his napkin on his lap. "Actually, I shouldn't say that, I got to build it. I don't think I would have without Mark. I'm good at software development, but convincing investors to put up capital for a project? Not so much."
"More Tesla and less 'Music Man,' in other words," says Jim.
"I guess, but I have never seen The Music Man. I know it was set in Gary, Indiana, which is where the Jackson Five are from, and Gary, Indiana now suffers from rampant unemployment and poverty." He smiles at Stacey. "I'm full of all kinds of fun facts like that."
"Here's what I don't get," says Stacey, " why do people even want to monetize and"--she uses air quotes again--"'give infrastructure' to legends and myths? Is there really that much money in it?"
"Who told you that's what it does?" says Tullus. Stacey looks admonishingly at Jim.
"Look," says Jim, "I don't claim to really understand it. I think it's unfair to expect every crypto-enthusiast to understand all the technology involved. Nobody expects that of people who think solar energy would be good for the planet. No one comes up to them and expects them to explain perfectly and simply how photo-voltaic cells work. It's unfair that people expect that of everyone who is interested in blockchain, digital currency, or decentralized ledger technology."
"No, no, no," says Tullus, taking a bite of ultra-processed meat. "With Logg, well, eventually with Logg, it's not quite there yet... You should be able to capture the human experience in ways never imagined before. To tell stories from every point of view. To weave a tapestry richer than you can imagine. Not just stories of the heroes and villains of legends and myths, not just oral traditions passed down generation to generation. Sure it can do that. But also the stories of the here and now. You and me. Our current reality.
"Here's an example, let's say you were a character in a book," Tullus looks at Stacey. "How would you describe the moment you first met you? Say you saw yourself come walking through a door. How would you describe that impression?"
Stacey says, "Well, I'd say Stacey Latero, a fiercely independent woman strode confidently into the room."
"Okay," says Tullus, "now how about you." He turns to Jim. "How would you describe it?"
"I don't know."
"Well, start with the first thing you would look at."
Jim thinks, Don't say breasts. "I don't know."
"But if you could describe what you looked at, and what you thought about it, it would be different, wouldn't it?"
Jim thinks, Yes, definitely. "I don't know. Maybe."
"Now, wouldn't you like to be able to experience both of those? To see both of those at once? In a way that was not confusing, but rather enriching?"
"Probably," says Jim. No.
"Absolutely," says Susan.
Tullus lifts his hands with pride, and with a smile says, "that's Logg."
