Dry Rain: Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2441

in Freewriterslast year

Keeping the foreword simple and sweet today, since I want to dedicate some time to a larger story to be published in a couple days. Started on a horror note, but near the end took a bit more of a comedic, lighthearted tone. Still trying to find my style, maybe.

Enjoy today's freewrite!

I always used to hate the rain, but I never used to fear it. It was April, I think, the clouds were dark and gray enough. I remember egretting not taking an umbrella with me to work.

There was a traffic jam along the way, the gridlock was too far too tell what was blocking movement, all I could see was a storm far ahead; distant blankets of rain falling to the ground below. I thought nothing of it at first, probably just a downed power line or someone not giving their brakes enough time to compensate for the wet roads. As the rain began to fall near us, however..

You know that smell right before it rains? It doesn’t last long into a storm, but when those first drops hit the ground, it’s enough to take you back to playgrounds and backyards.

Not this rain.

The air felt dry, yet thick, almost like a sandstorm. When I reached out to touch the rain, a drop that hit my hand landed with a sizzle. I pulled my hand back to reveal the spot it had landed was practically desiccated, wrinkled and red.

I watched the trees around me begin to yellow and wither, the people who had left their cars beginning to panic and try to flee back to their cars, even the nearby creek beginning to slowly fall in level as the raindrops began to land..

No, maybe a raincoat would be better.
