“Are you brave enough?” Captain H.F. Lee teased his beloved, Maggie Thornton.
“Of course I am – I fear no food,” she answered, “but we have to consider my cousin Margie.”
“Oh, she'll have plenty to say when she finds out you don't think she's brave enough.”
“Oh, she's brave enough and will have so much to say that the food will be cold before we ever eat it.”
“Maggie, believe me: this can't get cold!”
“You just don't know Margie, Harry.”
Sure enough …
“Possum curry? Possum curry! Who ever heard of anything so ridiculous! Why would you ruin a perfectly good possum like that, Harry? Haven't you yet heard that east is east, and west is west, and when they meet it's a trainwreck?”
“I don't think I've heard it quite that way, Margie,” Captain Lee said evenly, although his dark eyes sparkled such that Mrs. Thornton knew he was trying not to laugh.
“Well, you should have before bringing this up in here – you can't even smell the possum fat for all that stuff you have in there! I mean, I'm an Italian by heritage and I love garlic and tomatoes and cream and onions and peppers and all that, but all that curry, Harry – really? How could you do that to that poor possum?”
“I'm sure it will be lovely with spaghetti.”
“Look, Harry – you've already committed sacrilege against the possum. You want to add defiling some spaghetti?”
“Yes. You know Lees are audacious and rebellious – yes.”
In the end …
“It's not supposed to be this good,” Margie grumbled as she finished cleaning up her second helping.
“Of course not,” Captain Lee said. “Wait until Hoppy brings his assorted mountain kabobs through!”
“What does he – never mind, Harry, we're not brave enough,” Mrs. Thornton said. “Not tonight!”
