“Where have you been? How many people were there?”

“Six,” I said as I washed my hands.

“I keep telling you: only go out for essentials.”

The pandemic was 20 years gone. The fear had gone chronic.

The ghost of a threat haunted her still.

My grandparents had habits learned in the Great Depression, for example, saving everything because you never know when it might be needed. Well imagined and well written.

Thank you for reading ... I rolled a bunch of "survivor" stories from that generation plus a sense of the terror of the times together for this one...
