The sign above the door said, “MAGIC STUFF” in enormous, bright green letters. All caps, comic sans. It also featured a picture of a winking wizard who bore more than a passing resemblance to Gandalf.
“Welcome to Magic Stuff. What do you want?” sighed the woman at the counter. Her name tag said ‘Jane’ but it was printed so small you could barely read it from an arms length away. She was somewhere between 40 and 1000 years old, but she seemed harmless. Or at least, disinterested in causing harm for the moment. That would have to do.
“I was looking for a can full of kisses…?” squeaked Olive.
Nervousness made her squeak and shopping for the ingredients of this love spell was bound to make her at least a little nervous.
“We don't sell kisses in cans, honey.” And the (possible) witch behind the counter pinned her with one of those stares that pierces all the way to your very soul. She seemed to see something that softened her expression just a teeny tiny bit.
“We sell them by the gourd. Wait here.” and ‘Jane’ glided away as if her long skirt hid rollerblades or some sophisticated propulsion device.
Olive resisted the urge to bite her nails and counted the seconds until the woman eventually returned.
“Follow the spell carefully. You won't get a second chance.”
Then she shoved the gourd into Olive's hand and began to assist another customer. She hadn't even glanced at the money Olive had tried to pay. And it seemed that her nametag now said, ‘Jada’. Maybe it always had.
Later that evening, after hours of work at her cauldron, Olive had the potion. With just one drop, the hissing, vicious, one-eyed cat that frequented her neighborhood would finally calm down enough to let her love him and maybe he'd even love her back!
And so ends today's Freewrite. I bet you thought the potion was for a romantic interest, right? I think that would be illegal though so she probably made the right choice. Unless it didn't work and the cat really scratches her good this time and she has to explain all of this in the Emergency Room. The story ends here so we may never know.
