Fledgling: Part 106

in Freewriters2 days ago

Greetings Readers

I have actually been skipping the parts when Saita is going on her adventures, but hopefully I will have some time to work ont hat come this Friday, as I have a day off. Until then, please enjoy this update!

Mitis had come to enjoy her time with the Shaman and her apprentice. The tea blends were far superior to the ones that the Shaman before her had created. Morning sickness had hardly bothered Mitis once she had started drinking it once a day.

The Shaman had insisted on her coming to see them at least once a month to check on the development of the child she was carrying. She would sit on a bed with Kay behind her. The forest foundling would then place her hands on either side of her belly, and Silens would tell her the rough size and health of the foetus.

Mitis was sure now that Kay was communicating with Silens somehow, but she had no idea how. She knew that some shamans could communicate with their minds, but it was a rare skill, and there was no way to tell if it was even true, or some rumour.

“Would you like to know the gender?” asked Silens one day.

Mitis felt herself pale. She knew she was the first to bear the king’s child, and everything rode on the firstborn being a boy. A girl born early in a king’s reign spelt disaster for the king, who was considered weak for producing a female heir too early in his reign.

“I am too frightened.” Said Mitis.

Kay released her and held a fist out before dropping her middle finger down.

“It’s a male heir.”

“Isn’t it too early to tell?” she asked.

“You’re three months along at least. Kay can tell. I would be wary of informing the current king as of yet. You aren’t halfway through your pregnancy yet, and the monsoons will break close to the end of the pregnancy. It would not be safe for him to travel out here at that time.” Silens started taking jars from the shelves to make a different mixture of herbs. “Do you have a midwife in the village that can help?”

“The previous shaman handled all midwifery duties.”

“I see. Are there any other pregnancies I need to be aware of in the village currently?”

“A guardsman’s wife is about six months pregnant.”

“Kay, you will need to gather specific herbs for me in the coming days. Giving birth is no joke, nor is the recovery.”

Kay nodded her head, as if understanding.

“I can help. I know what herbs to help with.” Said Mitis.

“You think I’m stupid enough to send someone out into the forest who is carrying a king’s child?” asked Silens with a grin.

“I’m barely showing, and I’m not without my own form of protection. Right, Kay?”

Kay fixed her with a worried look.

Silens nodded her head. “You should be fine with Kay, and you can teach her things I haven’t gotten to yet.”

Silens looked out the window at the weather, “If you two go now, you will have about three hours. That’s more than enough time.”

Kay seemed to wave her arms in front of her, but Silens gave her a stern look and simply said. “I have explained to you the importance of King’s children. She is protected by law against attack, but animals care not for the law, and you can sense them coming. You will go with her.”

Kay snorted in annoyance but nodded her head before moving into the other room to gather what they would need to collect herbs. Mitis grinned a little that her plan had worked so well.

“Mitis.” Said Silens sharply.

The girl’s head spun around to look at her.

“Don’t pry.”

We'll see if she does or doesn't.
