Fledgling: Part 93

in Freewriters18 days ago

Greetings Readers!

I have been furiously working on the upcoming chapters of Fledgling, and I am very excited with how the story is developing.

Please enjoy this update as I work on more for you all to read!

Fledge was furious when he found himself back in the time corridor which led to his room. Rubar looked more confused than anything else.

“What just happened?”

“We were sent home like children.” Snapped Fledge.

He closed his eyes, ready to reach out to find his way back to his party. He was interrupted by a firm grip on his wrist. His eyes snapped open to see the Heavenly Matta gripping him tightly.

“You don’t have time for that. Your influence is done.” He said softly.

“What?”

“You did what you had to, but now you need to step back, as your influence needs to remain hidden for now.”

“You’re not making sense.”

“The rest of this journey is for Saita and Kay. Your journey ends here.”

Rubar growled, and Matta released the young man.

“That was not a threat.” He said hastily. “Understand that there are steps to correcting the timeline, and your influence on that has come to an end.”

“But…”

Rubar stood upright and sniffed the air. He knew the scent in the air, but he was so sure that she had abandoned her son.

“You have a guest. You will understand after you speak to her. For now, you are done.” Said Matta, releasing Fledge.

“A guest? Who would come and see me?”

Rubar pushed past him and set his clawed hands on the wall. He knew this was where Fledge’s door was, but only the Fledgling, or those linked to him, could open it. Most Fledglings were orphans, so no one else could get in. However, those linked by blood could manage it.

“Fledge…” Rubar whined as he sat before the door. “You need to go in.”

Fledge rolled his eyes and leaned over the Vulpine to open the door. He was so sure that no one would be in his room that he was actually shocked to see someone sitting on his bed. The left leg was crossed over the right at the knee, while the remaining body was leaning back on outstretched arms. Even the head was thrown back, as if watching the wall behind it instead of the door.

Fledge felt bile rise in his throat when he recognised the ripped and faded jeans and the short shirt that barely covered what he now knew was a tattooed belly. He knew exactly who this was before the head snapped up to attention to view him.

“Mother.” He said somewhat sarcastically.

“Didn’t think you’d be stupid enough to do this to get my attention.” She answered as she lowered her left leg to the floor with a grimace.

Now that he had her before him after so many years, he once more chided himself for thinking that Saita was his mother. They were not the same. Sure, they shared a face, but what he felt, this wasn’t her. No, this was someone completely different.

“Why are you here?” he asked as he walked into the room.

With a grunt, the woman swung her arms forward to grip the edge of the bed; her eye almost seemed to glow as she looked at her son. She said nothing for a long time but didn’t take her eye off him, as if gauging what he had been through lately.

“You met her then?”

“I did.”

“Do you know then?”

“I know that you lied about who my father was.”

That seemed to make her flinch, and Fledge didn’t let up.

“So, what happened? Too many potential boyfriends, and you pulled a random name from a hat?”

Annoyance crossed her face, and she raised a hand to scratch at the two lines under her left eye in irritation.

“No, I knew who your father was.”

“Then why lie about it?”

The women sat up straighter and grinned, ‘So you don’t know everything yet. I thought everything would have been blabbed to you by now.”

“What are you going on about, and what are you even doing here? I haven’t seen you in centuries. Hell, I even became a Fledgling to find you. A waste of my time.”

She seemed hurt by the comment before sighing heavily, “I saw you but a few days ago.”

“So, you have been spying on me…”

“You need to listen. I don’t have much time.”

Fledge’s jaw snapped shut, training from when he was a child to never interrupt his mother when she spoke. He hated that this was his reaction after so much time.

“You weren’t meant to be born. I didn’t know you existed.” Said the woman softly. “I thought if I gave you a father figure to look up to…that’s not important. I don’t have time to tell you everything. I left you with the Vulpine a few days ago to come to this moment in time because I was told you were here.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Fledge, I’ve been dead for a while.” She said with an odd grin. “Died a few days after I asked the Vulpine pack to look after you. I wanted more for you, but you stupidly got pulled into this mess. A mess I started.”

“What?”

“The time maw needed something, needs something, will need something, and I cannot fix what needs to be fixed, so I fed it, will feed it.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I never wanted this for you. I tried to make you understand that you shouldn’t follow me, but you were so clingy and I…I wasn’t a good mother. I had to leave. I knew that. I just didn’t know how much time I had.”

She gave a barked laugh and then looked away from Fledge, “I had too much and too little time.”

She then looked to the son she had abandoned, “She came to me after your first birthday. Told me what she had tried to do, the stupid bitch. Instead of correcting anything, she removed a keystone of time. Created a time maw, something far stronger than a Fell Dragon ever was. It needs, needed, and will need time to keep stable, but too much damage was done. I baulked; I didn’t want to help her after everything, but I knew I had to. I was her other half. I did what I could, but I knew that there would be a time when I had to leave you behind.”

Fledge knew nothing of what a time maw was, but from the way his mother was speaking, it was far more dangerous than any Fell Dragon ever was.
“But I don’t know what a time maw is.”

She smiled sadly, “That is good. Maybe the steps taken had started rightening the mistakes made.”
