Fledgling: Part 98

in Freewritersyesterday

Greeting readers

It has been a long week, and we're only sitting on Tuesday. Oof. Here is your cute picture of Snaffie to see how big he is getting.

I have been working quite a bit on Fledgling lately, and I am enjoying where the story has gone. I hope that you all continue to read with me as I continue to create the world.

Saita clenched her teeth as she clutched at the giant before her. She knew the time was close. The golden sheen had returned to Aidan’s half-favour. The boy had been hesitant to make his wish, not knowing what to say or think. Saita had coached him on what she had wished for, and now he was ready. She wasn’t.

“I am going to miss you.” She whispered into the giant’s chest.

“I thought I was never going to see you again, but knowing that we’re going to have over a hundred years together has brought much joy to me.”

Bolx squeezed her tightly. He could feel tears gathering in his eyes. He wasn’t losing her the same way that she was losing him, but it still hurt somehow. He released her, knowing that her son had similar feelings he wanted to express.

Aidan, however, didn’t. He wrapped his arms around his mother and squeezed as hard as he could.

“You’re going to make an amazing King, but don’t let your wife have too much freedom in naming your children.” She warned.

“Come with us.” He begged.

“I can’t. I have lived this life already, and I cannot take it away from her. She is going to need both of you, and soon. Those twins are a handful.”

The Balance Dragon stood close by. She had taken the twins to their new timeline with the promise of it being a far better life than what they would live on this dying planet. She was to leave soon herself. She just wanted to make sure that Red-Eye would be seen off safely with Saita’s new skills.
Aidan released her and gripped the piece of paper in his hand. His lips were tightly sealed, as if not ready to say the words he had to.

“Aidan…” started Saita softly.

“Just…just one more minute.” Came the soft reply.

They gave it to him before he finally whispered what he wanted from his wish. Saita knew the only reason it worked without a Heavenly within their presence was because there was one with her when she made the same wish.

The favour glowed slightly, and before any more words could be spoken, the giant and child faded from the room. Saita squeezed her eye closed, trying to stave off the pain that flooded her heart.

“You know they are going to live amazing lives.” Said the Balance Dragon.

“I know, but I won’t get to go through it again.” She rubbed the heel of her hand against her eye, distributing the gathering tears across her face.

“We should not stay here much longer. It’s time to get the last three into their right places.”

Saita, now done wiping any trace of tears away, went to the door that still remained closed. She knocked on the door, knowing that two of the three people she needed were within the room.

“It’s time.” She said softly.

She had been so sure that the Fell Dragon and the Wolven within would have tried to flee, but it would seem that both knew that this would have been futile with what needed to be done. The door opened, and the Wolven exited first.

“We are ready.” He said sullenly. “Though I wish we had had more time to truly leave as friends.”

“I wish I could give it to you.” Whispered Saita.

“No use in stalling this. We need to go to those babysitting us.”

Saita had explained to Kay where she was planning on sending her. Her mood had considerably worsened after that conversation. Neither really had a choice, as this was the best option. That said, one more person needed to agree with this plan for it to work.

The four house occupants made their way outside, where the weather was still frigid, but no more snow was falling at the moment. Saita needed to concentrate, and the snow would only have been a distraction for her.

Kay stood close to Red-Eye as the Balance Dragon guided Saita through the various steps needed to find the correct universe and timeline to return Red-Eye to. Kay understood the words but had no hope in understanding how to implement the steps to do what Saita was doing. She knew that once Saita was done here, it was her turn.

It wasn’t as much as where or when Kay was being sent to, but rather with whom. Kay hadn’t thought it a great idea, and neither had Bolx, but Saita’s mind had been made up. She was sure that her plan would work, and her older self was adamant in the choice. Kay didn’t care. Honestly, a little time away from Saita would be a blessing.

Kay watched as Saita identified the correct location before opening the veil. Red-Eye’s ears went up immediately.

“Your pack is close and looking for you.” Said Saita softly.

Red-Eye's ears flicked backwards and lay across his skull as he looked down at Kay. The young woman looked up at him and grinned.

“Go on. I told you to live your life free. Go have a few pups.”

“Return to my kin one day.” He said as he squatted. “Return, and I will ensure that you will have a companion. I swear you will never be alone again.”

“Get going before you make my eye teary.” Kay leaned over to push him away from her.

The giant wolf-like creature wrapped his arms around her, gave a bone-crushing hug, then loped toward the tear and disappeared. The Balance Dragon nodded her head once and muttered, “Good job.”

She sat down and then indicated that Saita should continue. “I now need to make sure the two of you leave safely.”

Before Kay could give a sarcastic remark, the Balance Dragon turned to stare at her. Kay decided it wasn’t worth saying anything and kept quiet instead.

“You’re not coming with us?” asked Saita.

“I think the old girl will give me an earful if she sees what was buzzing around in my head.” Said the Dragon as she tapped her head. “And if she found out what I did, she would tan my hide. No, I think I will leave this journey to you.”

Saita once more closed her eye. Her ability to recognise lifeforce was helpful, but with so many times and places to choose from, a single individual was hard to find. Or so she thought. She was shocked when a single source jumped out at her. Her shock was clearly evident as the Balance Dragon grinned.

“God, that woman always knew too much. Always pinned my pregnancy within days of conception, you’d think she was in the room when we did the deed.” She sighed. “Best you two go, she is clearly waiting for you.”

“Will you be okay?” asked Saita.

“If you never see me again, then yes. Then the timeline is corrected. If you see me, well, then we have a bigger problem.”

The Balance Dragon turned to the one of Chaos and said one final thing, “I am sorry.”

The next update will be a sad one, but necessary.
