Greetings everyone
It has been a weird week with cancelled classes, but at least Snaffie is starting to get tamer. Yay, I was worried that with him being male, it would be much more difficult.
Anyway, grab the tissues, because here comes the sad update I told you about.
She had known her husband’s time was close. He had been more tired recently after retiring. Losing his daughter twice had marred his soul, and he struggled to recover, even after more great-grandchildren were born. He got to see three of Saita and Bolx’s children, as well as Saasha’s only daughter, but after that, Silens could see that Baks was finally at an end.
She knew that this day was coming. Even her old bones were starting to ache when it got cold, but something within her wasn’t ready to end. She had been prepared to lie down with her husband for the final time, even if it was an aided transition, but powers she had been denying for decades were surfacing.
At a young age, she knew that she had shamanic powers but had hidden them. It was said in their culture that no one with shamanic powers could ever inherit the throne. That was the only thing she had wanted when she slaughtered her first brother. She was so sure that she was going to change the course of her people’s lives.
She had been right, but sadly, it wasn’t a prosperous one. They had all been wiped out to prevent the Saith from gaining a powerful ally. It had started a journey in her life that had led her to where she was now. Multiple children, even more grandchildren and great grandchildren, but there was no one else like Silens. She was the last of her kind, and now the only other person who had met her people was drawing breath slower and more shallowly as the minutes ticked away.
There was no illness. This was age. And while Silens knew that this was the night she would lose the man who took her to the stars, she wasn’t sad. She had insisted on the giant visiting all their living family over the last week. She had taken him to the humans to enjoy a feast while holding the youngest of his grandchildren, the result of Saasha and Brucel’s final wish.
She had gone with him to the graveyard on the anniversary of his previous wife's and daughter’s deaths. Then they had spent a few hours with their firstborn. It had been hard losing her a second time, now having gotten to know her as a person and not just an unborn child.
This evening, she had made sure that his favourite meal had been prepared, and they had eaten it on the balcony, watching the stars. He had then complained that he was tired and felt terrible that he was ruining the night. She had taken him to bed, where he had fallen asleep first, and was now slowly fading away. There was no trauma, no fighting, just blissful, eternal sleep. She didn’t cry or scream. She knew what was to come now.
As soon as the sun had spread its warmth, and Baks lay cold, she had called the family together to make arrangements. She had remained stoic in the public eye, but in the privacy of her empty chambers, she was making plans for the next part of her life. She would attend the funeral and would escape the gaze of her family as soon as they felt they had all mourned an appropriate amount of time.
She took nothing with her but the clothes on her back; she wouldn’t need much more than that. She slipped past the evening patrols and made her way to the ancient forest, where she knew she would meet those waiting for her. As soon as she was sure that she was in the right place, she simply sat down and waited, extending her lifeforce to the one looking for her.
Within minutes, two figures made their way toward her. One walked tall and with pride, while the other seemed to have her hands buried deeply in her pockets. Silens got to her feet and embraced Saita as she came within arm’s reach.
